Hello list, well, my problem should be already out of the range of this list, but maybe i'd get some useful hints. Anyway, i was trying to generate dvi file, but found the latex doesn't do it anymore, i'm pretty sure that the target format is dvi. The binary program of latex is from the package texlive-latex-base 2007-13. To get the dvi file is really important to me because of my native language. Does anyone know about this story? Thanks in advance. QY -- Linux version 2.6.22-3-686 Debian GNU/Linux lenny/sid |

Well, it seems that my linux-distro has changed the symbol-link of the /usr/bin/latex to pdftex. But to which file should /usr/bin/latex have pointed, so that i can get the dvi file again? Thank you. (actually it should be pdflatex, not pdftex.) Does it help if you specify '-output-format dvi' as a command-line parameter? (man pdflatex) HTH, Andreas -- Real programmers don't document. Does it help if > you specify '-output-format dvi' as a command-line parameter? (man > pdflatex) pdflatex symlinks to pdftex. pdftex is what runs them all. Everything has been consolidated into pdftex. pdftex --help is a quick way to verify all of this. Of course, "man pdftex" will also work fine. Note that "man pdftex" brings up the same man page as "man pdflatex". --Ted -- Ted Pavlic <te...@te...> |

Don't be deceived by the name. "pdftex" just means "normal tex that is able to produce PDFs, but it doesn't have to." If you type: pdftex --help I think you'll find a bunch of options that answer your question. In particular, pdftex -output-format=dvi Hope that helps. -- Ted Qiuye Wang wrote: > Well, it seems that my linux-distro has changed the symbol-link of the > /usr/bin/latex to pdftex. Hi, thank you all for the responses. I think i've found the reason why the pdftex generated the pdf file directly. There is a STRING ``pdftex'' in the preamble of the tex file (\usepackage[pdftex,bookmarks] {hyperref}). If i remove it from the tex file, then i get a dvi file. Hmm, that's weird because i could get a dvi file sometime with the very same tex file. Anyway, thank you again for the help. Sure, of course, but if you want to FORCE production of a DVI (for example, when you select "dvi" as a target in Vim), you'll have to add the command-line switch in your .vimrc. --Ted Qiuye Wang wrote: > Hi, > > thank you all for the responses.
