For me it happened in language "C".

My "complaint" was due to the fact that I used
\usepackage[latin1]{inputenc} for the first time with vim-latex,
which again the reason I didn't reread the FAQ because everything
worked fine till then.  So inputenc might be a criterion.
Otherwise one probably wouldn't use "é" -- except in comments.
