As for your suggestion:

:map \ll
No mapping found.

I'm using gvim 6.1.  Yes, I was unclear.  I can type
the letters :-), but nothing happens when I do.  

I did what I thought was a correct install.  Now
I have some idea what's wrong (no mapping found).
