What browser is it?  If it's Firefox (or another Mozilla engine), it may be caused by a reflow bug that still exists in the 1.0 branch.  (Though is fixed for 1.1, I believe)
To test, when you get it, do a Ctrl-<Plus> Followed by a Ctrl-<Minus> to force the page to reflow.  If it returns to the correct number of columns, you know it's a browser bug, and not a code bug.

And the problem is only on one browser, and only for searching
(index.php doesn't have that problem, and other browsers don't have
that problem at the same time). It goes away by itself...
