LDAP integration does not appear to work

I've configured the closed group to use ldap and have checked all of the settings using an ldap browser.

On saving the settings in the admin page, the closed group bit reverts to no closed group.

When attempting to edit a page the set user name drop down is empty.

Is thrown in the error log. This appears to happen when the site is accessed rather than when an attempt is made to edit a page.
