    Hello

I was using a using a password to mount 2 back up disks. A prompt windows was always asking for the password.

Today, The password is no longer asked and these disks are automatically mounted without asking for the password.

Did I unvoluntarily do something ? How can I do to re-activate the password ?

    Thanks for your help

I have an encrypted volume on my pc and whenever I start my PC, Veracrypt asks for the password of that volume.
It doesn't ask it anymore for 2 external disks, so it should not be a fast start issue, should it be ?

Moreover the 2 external disks are not permanently connected to my pc.

The second link I provided in my reply above tells you one of the symptoms is no longer asking for password.

Did you check if Fast Startup was enabled? If yes, disable Fast Startup and reboot your PC.

    Starting with 1.24 Update 7:

    • Implement detection of Hibernate and Fast Startup and disable them if RAM encryption is activated.
    • Warn about Fast Startup if it is enabled during VeraCrypt installation/upgrade, when starting system encryption or when creating a volume, and propose to disable it.

Fast Startup is not enabled and never was.
Moreover the problem is not with th Veracrypt volume on my PC but with Veracrypt volumes on external disk which are not permanently connected to my PC

Are you using VeraCrypt for system encryption?

If yes, do you have these two external drives setup in System Favorites?

Is the password for VC volume that is on the PC the same as the external drives?

Do you have auto-mount enabled in Settings > Preferences?

Are you VeraCrypt caching the password in Preferences?

Are you using VeraCrypt for system encryption?

      Yes

Is the password for VC volume that is on the PC the same as the external drives?

Yes and for several years without any problem

Do you have auto-mount enabled in Settings > Preferences?

In Settings>Preferences, I do no see any "auto-mount" option . If "auto-mount" means a prompt windows asks me to enter the password, this is the case for the volume on PC, when my PC starts, and was the case for external disk when I connected if

Are you VeraCrypt caching the password in Preferences?

      No

    I don't understand what happened.
I changed nothing, did not even restart my PC, and now it works as before !

Auto-mount is "Mount all device-hosted VeraCrypt volumes".

Can you post a screenshot of your VeraCrypt Settings > Preferences?

The only thing that might be the issue is you need to enable the option "Start VeraCrypt Background Task" in the "Actions to perform upon logon to Windows" since you have enabled "User logs off" for the dismount.

    https://www.veracrypt.fr/en/VeraCrypt%20Background%20Task.html

    EDIT:
Actually, I make it a habit to manually dismount all VeraCrypt non-system encrypted volumes.

Just had this happen. Put drive in external enclosure, selected it in VC, hit mount, and it mounted automatically without requiring the password. So much for being secure. If VC is just going to randomly decrypt drives without requiring a password, I'm better off with BitLocker, which is just sad. That this happens at all is problematic, but the fact it's even possible is disturbing and makes me question if these drives are really encrypted. And no, Fastboot isn't enabled, and last time I put the drive in, it required a password, and I haven't rebooted since then, nothing has changed, it just suddenly now mounted it without a password. And just because it stopped doing it for the other user, and even if it stops doing it for me, who's to say it won't randomly do it again in the future, thereby making it unreliable for its purpose. Also, passwords are NOT cached, I don't use system encryption, and not only is auto-mount not enabled, but that's not the issue as this is happening, as with the other user, with an external drive, NOT the system drive, and with Windows already running, NOT on startup.
