Lets give these iso's a try I think we are ready for a public release. I encourage all of our internal developers to please try and report any show stoppers before we go public with these. Hopefully all is ok but just to be safe lets go one more time. Just a reminder there is no text installer that is usable we are aiming for a very high success rate on the gui installer. The iso's are here: ftp://ftp-osl.osuosl.org/pub/vectorlinux/Uelsk8s/test/VL6.0-SOHO-A1.9.22.iso ftp://ftp-osl.osuosl.org/pub/vectorlinux/Uelsk8s/test/VL6.0-SOHO-A1.9.22-CD2.iso there are deltas up in the same directory if you have the previous A1.9.21 iso's good hunting! Well, I just grabbed this and ran it. Here are my results Custom installation, ignoring CD2 contents on purpose (i'm lazy like that) ;) Installation went flawlessly grub setup was flawless (no other os's on this vm). There is a problem running grub2 on a VM, the boot menu lags for a while... but that's only on VM is it's a grub problem not a VL problem, so we'll leave that alone. root and user passwords are set, and system boots just fine. Again, I have another problem doing this on a VBox VM, but I've had it ever since the first alpha was released. KDE wont start. I see the KDM login, so I put my use name and password and it loads the desktop. Flashes before my eyes for like 5 seconds, and then, it's back to KDM. The only way to get around this that I know of, is to install the VBox Guest additions. Then I get the desktop. Other than that, it's good here. But please, dont believe me... the thing may just know it's me and be on it's best behaviour, so we need some outsiders to test this out. |

Hi, guys. Here's my take. Installer isn't that bad, it's even nice. But: 1) You can't select Windows partitions in fstab in installer, only Linux partitions are available to choose mountpoint for. 2) I've got a minor misunderstanding, when installer asked my for second disc - tray was locked. Then I pressed ok, i have another disc, tray was unlocked and I could insert disc two. 3) Also bootloader install is fucked up. It didn't detect FreeBSD, didn't detect Windows XP (which old installer did). It found only VL I installed and detected it as "Slackware 12.1_". And I couldn't find a way to add another OS in bootloader in installer. Now the actual run: 4) When you start VL from HDD first time, you have to configure X again. Why won't it use Xorg.conf generated while starting up the installer? 5) I have used my old /home partition, and /home/vanger appeared to be chowned to 1000.none and chmodded to 700. That is really bad, if user already has an old user directory, it should be chmodded and chowned properly by installer. 6) SHOWTOPPER When you try to start up KDE4, you get an xmessage "kstartupconfig4 does not exist or fails. Th". And when you press "ok", everything horribly-horribly dies in some wildly-coloured blinking text-mode garbage. Why won't we use KDE 4.3.0? As I see, release would be in a month, KDE 4.2.3 will look too old-fashioned by that time. I think, we should switch to KDE 4.3.0 as fast as possible, to give it more extensive testing (and to be able to blame some bugs on KDE devs). Also, we won't need to debug why our current 4.2.3 dies. |

Actually, the installer should list all of your partitions. You should be able to see their current fs to the very right of the listing entry. You cannot select a linux mount point like /, /usr, /opt for it without formatting. The installer will actually warn you about this, and will only let you select /mnt/xyz[0-9] for it. We do need to debug the dual cd thing... I have not had chance to test this on real hardware, so I really dont know how accurate the code is. HOpe to get some time by the end of the week to test some more. Buf if I could get some more input from other users if this does/does not work for you all, also, the type of hardware involved... Desktop box / laptop cdrom units? I would vote for vanger's suggestion of using the xorg.conf created during installation, except for one thing. The initrd that boots for the installer is very limited, module wise, so your video will not always be the best using whatever was used during installation to run the installed system, but I think it's worth a shot. About the permissions problem. I'm going to need you guys to tell me how to set these Here is a link to the code that sets these, but I'm not sure if this is enough http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/trac/vinstall/browser/branches/speedy/MdlMain.module#L600 basically, what that does is this "chown -R <user>:<user> /mnt/target/home/<user>" Let me know what I'm missing here, and I'll take care of it. #6 is beyond the installer, so I'll leave that one along. |

Hmm, nevermind the kde, should be kdm thing, as it dies horribly when I try to run fluxbox too. I've switched to vesa drivers, instead of nv - well, now it isn't dying, window managers just don't start. Ok, investigating... > Actually, the installer should list all of your partitions. You should > be able to see their current fs to the very right of the listing > entry. Out of 4 partitions on sda, four on hda and three on hdb, only hda partitions were shown for me. Though I'll retry it. > You cannot select a linux mount point like /, /usr, /opt for it > without formatting. Emm, I was trying to set my /dev/sda3 as /mnt/win_d, particularly. > We do need to debug the dual cd thing... Just combine that "Ok, I have another disk" with eject command. > HOpe to get some time by the end of the week to test some more. Does new VasmCC provide you with graphical xorg options editor? If it does, just launch it after first boot. On bare xorg, without any wm, if you need. > About the permissions problem. It should be: if sAccntName=="root" then chown -R root:root /mnt/target/root else chown -R sAccntName:users /mnt/target/home/sAccntName && chmod 755 /mnt/target/home/sAccntName I don't think it's safe to chmod -R 755, people may have some installed apps there. |

we're not doing anything to the root home in particular, as we're only setting the root password, everything else comes from pre-configured home for root I guess. I will get these permissions set as described above. Unless someone else suggests differently by the end of the day. I need you to do me a favor, boot up the ISO, cd or whatever you're booting. when the installer loads up, open a terminal and show me the output of probepart also show me the output of os-prober Thanks |

Ok, my KDE troubles were combined from two things: weird ownership on ~/.Xdefaults and 8600GT running on outdated "nv" driver from Xorg 1.4.2. So I downloaded drivers from nVidia - but wtf? Two CDs, but no kernel-headers. That's really bad. > I need you to do me a favor, boot up the ISO, cd or whatever you're booting. > when the installer loads up, open a terminal and show me the output of probepart > also show me the output of os-prober Attached. |

Sorry for so many letters, just wanted to copy-paste nvidia drivers' error: ERROR: The kernel header file '/lib/modules/2.6.27.12/build/include/linux/version.h' does not exist. The most likely reason for this is that the kernel source files in '/lib/modules/2.6.27.12/build' have not been configured. I'm not a pro in packaging kernels, I'm currently make modules && make modules_install to make nVidia drivers install, but it is a major issue to deal with. |

Still needs smart packager in order for kpackage to work. will test more later in the day. all in all great work. hope we are going to do something else for the lilo splash screen though.. don't like the read standard lilo splash. Installer worked pretty well, though there was some confusion when prompted for the second CD - I had to click OK, wait, manually eject the first disk, then insert the second disk and click OK a second time. Can't say I'm all that fond of KDE 4 so far. Most things seem to be working, but I'm having trouble with the help - it complains about a missing index, prompts me to generate it, but complains about missing files. Search in the help then doesn't do anything. I also had some problems with sound on my T61. Took several attempts to get it working - for some reason, the speaker is not selected in the mixer controls, and after it is selected, it is muted - a bit confusing getting it going. :) I'll download the later isos and try them later if I get the chance. paul. |
