Vl-Dyn-5.9.8.9 bug report I got the latest iso, very nice indeed, great packages selection (as usual) These are the bugs I hit (mostly minor, didn't make any strechting of the installation either): ---- INSTALL ---- ** Some typos and grammar in the Readme: - The first paragraph is odd, has "flavour" too many times. - When mentioning the kernel source/headers says "for your hacking convenient", wich sounds as a typo to me. - In "New libraries" > Multimedia > "mesh with" should be "mess with"? - in "Acknowledgments" > "of cource" should be "of course". ---- FIRST BOOT - X CONFIGURATION ---- ** The console didn't fit well in the graph behind it, so it overlapped the frame at the right side. I guess it was 1 or 2 columns too wide. ** I _think_ I was asked to select my keymap twice. Not the usual installation/configuration stages but twice at the config stage. ** The installer didn't detect my monitor's Sync values, so X testing failed during the install and could start without further configuration. The process kept on fine beyond that. ** Bootsplash. At 800x600 the progress bar doesn't, well... progress. ** If the system boots stright to runlevel 4 the keymap is wrong, AltGr doesn't work and I cant switch to tty2 by pressing Ctl+Alt+F2. It does work if I Kill the Xserver > init 2 > startx 0_o ---- PACKAGES ----- ** Xpdf is missing libt1.so.1 ** gyachi is missing libltdl.so.3 ** LinNeighborhood seems to be missing the patch that makes it samba 3 compatible: http://www.bnro.de/~schmidjo/faq/index.html#faq17 Btw, I have seen distros where the full samba is NOT required for LinNeighborhood to be able to browse and share mounts. ---- XFCE Menu ---- ** Found many apps are missing from the menu. We should definitely build xpdf against the glibc, etc., in the current dynamite. As far as gyachi goes, IIRC, the package was a prebuilt binary against another Linux. Inside qemu, the X autoconf would lock up the VM and I had to do a
system_reset on the qemu console after I got tired of waiting ;). On
reboot, I had to manually run vasm autoconf after unselecting X config
so the full configuration session was performed. A fully manual text
mode xorgconfig then did it for X.
On the physical hardware install, X autoconf ran through normally and
gave a working config for the ATI X600 (no 3D of course). Native LCD
resolution was correctly recognized using the last option ("let X
handle it").

I didn't go for the bootsplash, so I could see if something obviously
wrong scrolled by in the messages, so I tried standard text mode in
qemu and framebuffer 1024x768@256 in the physical install. Both
worked, however, for cosmetic reasons, we should really look into
loosing the many "cat /proc/splash file not found" messages when not
using the bootsplash.

Yes, but just a little point to keep in mind when we do the KDE stuff
for SOHO 5.8: Any KDE Desktop icons that don't work or don't make
sense in XFCE should have the "OnlyShowIn=KDE" or the "NotShowIn=XFCE"
switch in them.

I couldn=B4t tell, but FWIW, booting to runlevel 2 and switching consoles (both in console mode and after a "startx") works fine. Regards. |

Another thing on X Server A while ago I found this little eror is present in the last releases: In /etc/fonts/fonts.conf , around line 27 there are entries missing for the fonts, such as <dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi</dir> <dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi</dir> <dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc</dir> I have verified that these being absent there prevents _some_ applications (i.e. Firefox, Seamonkey and others) to use the fonts in those directories. (If you are thinking that is "corrected" by having them in xorg.conf, that doesn=B4t happen) Also, in xorg.conf (I dont know if in fonts.conf too), the lines for these folders should look like this: FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/artwiz:unscaled" HTH UKBill |

That is the name of our "Father of Education". His complete name was Ki Hajar Dewantara. Break it down further ... Bahasa Indonesia has also absorbed *a lot* of Dutch words. Perhaps you could talk with xeon and The Headacher about that. :) But anyway, about Dewantara... :) What stock does it derive from? Dynamite? How much does it differ? |

The hardest part is translating the installer and VASM to Indonesian, and make it simpler. :( The funniest part is relacing the decoration (logo, wallpapers, icons, etc) :-) Other than that are the same. I keep the vl-hot up to date, but the new VASM and graphical installer are not adopted yet. I also trying so hard not to upgrading it with slack current, because slack current is using a new glibc. However, I compiled the new gtk-2.10.x and the related packages including the newest xfce4-beta. Well, my feelings about new version are mixed. While 5.9.7.4 could be used to live and work with, this release is more buggy. But it is a step forward. Installation was really speedy and bugless. Can't say this about configuration - net configuration scripts are not working. I'll tell more later. I very like that booting speed has increased - 5.9.7.4 booted in three times more slowly then XP. This is about 1.3 times ;) . The bulk idea was finally realised - it is very handy too. Great packages selection - I would never believe, that iso is less then 400M ;) . But the bugs are now in usability.. I was really disappointed, that there is no fluxbox. Xfce didn't impress me by anything, exept of absence of xmms in the Menu - Multimedia. There are several cool features, but whole DE is not comfortable for me. Yes, that is IMHO. It is the main thing, that spoiled me all the joy from new version - orientation only on xfce. I started using VL, that time a Dynamite4, just because it was speedy, had fluxbox and some great themes for them. I'm really disappointed with that DNS checking on the start of WM and "If you don't have internet connection, you may have troubles". That is why I installpkged the flubox, it does not such a stupidity, sorry. I'm tired to ctrl+a and then change fonts for all Russian texts I want to read.. About that net configuration scripts bug - they just simply fail to work. They say /sbin/vinetset: line 329: /etc/rc.d/rc.inet: No such file or directory /sbin/vinetstart: line 85: /etc/rc.d/rc.inet: No such file or directory I've tried doing symlink and hard link from /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 to /etc/rc.d/rc.inet , but this didn't solve the problem. The scripts now work without any errors, but rc.inet simply does not change, I have to set up my caonnection manually. And even after correction rc.inet1 fails to set up right routes. I just deleted it all and started using ifconfig eth0 192.168.111.2 && route add default gw 192.168.111.1 . That is both simple and working. These all are just minor issues, but they spoil all fun.
