[Vectorlinux-devel] VLdynamite-5.9.8.15 - My experiences

Some of my observations about this version:

If you run X as root, the start menu entries for VASM and GSLAPT do not
work.

Sylpheed starts with error message:
=2E. locale encoding is not UTF_8, but the environment variable
G_FILENAME_ENCODING is not set...

BTW, if you have Seamonkey with a similar integrated app, is Sylpheed
really necessary? Same thing with Bluefish.

Start menu entry for "File Manager (XFFM)" does nothing

Launch Feedback:
Panel Browser button: I check the box in properties for launch
feedback, but it does not seem to have any effect.
I like launch feedback and enable it for all the desktop and panel
launchers. Would like to have it for items on start menu as well. Is
there a performance penalty involved?

Seamonkey: If I try to launch from the desktop icon when already
running, I get the Profile Manager which will not let me launch a
second copy using the same profile. Panel button works though.

The "Samba Network" application works great. Only gripe is that it
shows your password in plain text when you type it in.

I'm unable to figure out "pyNeighborhood". I can add hosts, but not
mount from there. What does it do that "vlsmbmnt" does not?

Menu Editor:
The items between "Help" and "Settings" don't show up. I see an entry
"include".. does it pull that in from somewhere else?

JACK Rack: Will there be some install/setup option to configure and
start the jackd server?

THUNAR file associations: Not much pre-configured yet.


Otherwise, lots of good points. VLC media player works great. I support
keeping it along with the others (mplayer, xine, xmms).

When VASM 2 comes out, it will have (actually, I already wrote this
part, along with conf tools) a utility called vopen that takes local
files and URIs and runs program x, y, z with them. That means it works
on forms like ssh://somehost as well.

That way, Thunar, and Seamonkey, and Firefox, etc. can /all/ use the
same program, and /all/ the preferences can be set in the same place.

But that's a way off I think.
