Just installed it on my laptop. Seems fine, I not sure that default wallpaper says "VectorLinux" though. Other than that, it's good |

Hello, I was going to give B1.1 a shot but could not get past finding the media step. For some odd reason the installer just stalled at the screen indefinitely. I attempted to run the installer from gambas but it could not run the project - an error message about 'could not find image' stalled it's progress. In the end, I was not able to do anything with B1.1. My installation was on real hardware using an ISO install method. Anyone having troubles with b1.1? Cheers, newt |

I updated my ISOs to B1.2 and began the installation. It hung at the same point with the included installer. I tried running the installer from the gambas IDE and got the same error message as with B1.1 (something about missing images). I then updated the installer (as suggested) and noticed that the update process spit out a bunch of 'restored image' messages plus it updated a few installer files from SVN. I re-ran 'gbr2 /root/speedy/vinstall...' and the same problem occurred - the installer hung when searching for install media. Again, I tried the gambas IDE and this time it worked - the restored images much have fixed the error message I was receiving earlier. Additionally, I was able to complete the entire installation this time (running the installer from the IDE allowed it to get past the 'finding media' stage). I did a pretty straight-forward install without testing the installer functionality and all seemed to work well (re-used and re-formatted partitions, custom but only unchecked ATI driver, lilo bootloader to bootsector, new users, etc). Upon reboot, I noticed that the label for my windows partition was not as I chose during the install. During the installation the label was 'window-sda1' but the lilo boot entry shows 'MicrosoftWindow' (not a big deal but not what I specifically chose). During configuration I chose to install proprietary Nvidia drivers. This immediately failed with a message indicating it could not find the kernel source, however I DID choose to install it. Since it failed xorg must have been configured with the 'nv' driver by default because that's what was being used when X started. I have a widescreen monitor (1680x1050), and when KDM displayed there are left and right vertical areas that are not covered by the KDM theme. These areas display with various 'crap'. The first boot they are being displayed with the equivalent of 'black-and-white ants' only multicolored. The second boot they displayed with some multicolored ants and what looked like window controls (i.e. a partial windows with titlebar and icon along with a blue background). Again, not a big deal but not pretty by any means. A KDM theme that can cope with widescreens would be preferred but black vertical bars would suffice. When KDE started, everything was very sluggish. Responsiveness was delayed by 1+ seconds for everything. Right-click on desktop and I have to wait 1-2 seconds for the menu to be displayed. Move the analog clock, and I have to wait ~2 seconds after letting go of the mouse button for it to actually move. Worst of all, I could not see the KDE menu. I would click on the menu and the outline of the menu would show but nothing else (i.e. I could still see the desktop background where the menu should be showing), not to mention that it would take a couple seconds for the menu outline to even display. I'm betting that these issues (display and responsiveness) are somehow related to the display driver issue I had, but perhaps not. Overall, it was not a very successful test. I could not use KDE in any kind of productive way so I was unable to test anything else. Also, I did not put the installer through any kind of tests this go-round. I'm looking forward to the next beta. Hello, I was going to test installing B1.3 but was unable to. The installer stalls when searching for install media, but usually I'm able to run the installer from the gambas IDE to get it find the install media - this time it could not find the installable ISO media on /sda1. I would have tried updating the installer with SVN but it seems networking is disabled in B1.3. Cheers, newt |

this didnt make sense to me how the same code running from IDE would get different results, so I ran a few tests and found that if I exited the installer before doing anything in it, and ran from the IDE, I got the same results. Hello, I thought I'd try the latest B1.4 but have run into the same problems that do not allow me to continue the installation. The problems that I run into are: 1) The gbr2 installer that starts automatically cannot find the install source. It hangs/stalls indefinitely and I have to actually kill the process to get it to quit. 2) Running the installer from the IDE cannot find my ISOs which sit at the root of an ntfs partition. The good part is that the installer never hangs/stalls, but I cannot actually continue the installation. I decided I would try mounting my ntfs partition to make sure the ISOs are sitting at the root of it, and determined that the installer environment (initrd?) cannot mount ntfs partitions. I get an error message describing missing modules and that I should try 'modprobe fuse' first. So then I tried 'modprobe fuse' and received a similar error message about missing modules. The best I can guess is that my problems with the IDE installer not finding the installation ISOs (#2) is due to this ntfs-mounting problem. Did something change between B1.2 and B1.3 regarding ntfs/modules/fuse/etc? However, the other issue (#1) is a different beast. I cannot determine why the gbr2 installer would just hang but the IDE installer would run fine, and don't have enough knowledge to "see" what's going on when the grb2 installer hang. It actually hangs before the status message starts cycling through any of my devices. All in all, I would guess that my problems are pretty specific to me (i.e. iso-install located on root of ntfs partition) and that 99% of other folks won't run into the same problems so it may not be worth the effort to make this work for me. My next attempt will be to actually burn the discs and see how that goes. I'll be sure to let you all know. Cheers, newt |

Hello, I found time to give B1.6 a try and it seems to be working much better. The default gbr2 installer still hangs when looking for ISO install source and I have to kill the pid. However, the gambas IDE installer runs fine and finds the source at the root of an ntfs partition just fine. Also, I can still reproduce that strange installer bug I mentioned a while back regarding the 'Search Again' button losing it's ability to find the install media. The way I make the bug show is to click next until you get to the step where you create new partitions or use existing partitions. Then I click back to go back to the install source step. Then I click 'Search Again' a couple times. After about the 2nd or 3rd time it can no longer find the install source ISOs. However, I don't think this is a big deal because 1) it takes a strange set of steps to make it happen, and 2) I recall that M0E could not reproduce the bug so it could very well be limited to my system/scenario (ISO install method, iso's sitting on ntfs partition, multiple mixed hard drives sata and ide). All of the other bugs I mentioned in my B1.2 test have been resolved: lilo labels are correct, proprietary nvidia driver installs and works, no more left and right kdm vertical bars, kde responsiveness was great - no sluggishness, kde menu displays normally. It all seems to have installed correctly. One thing I noticed is that my audio did not work. lspci identifies it as intel high definition audio, while windows identifies it as sigmatel high definitial audio. Perhaps they are synonymous? Anyway, I tried playing several of the system sounds and nothing actually made any sounds. I checked the mixer volume and mute setting, and both appeared to be set correctly. I didn't investigate beyond this. Last, I noticed that the KDE menu 'Favorites' do not list the VL-specific tools anymore. I imagine they'll be added back before the final but just thought I'd mention this. I did not do any application testing. Cheers, newt |

Hello Uel, B1.6 allowed me to install via the gambas IDE installer, but the gbr2 installer continued the 'lockup' problem. In other words, ntfs/fuse/etc seems to be working in this beta such that the installer can find the install source at the root of an ntfs partition, but for the strangest reason the installer - when run from the runtime (gbr2) - just gets stuck when looking for install media. I HAVE to use the gambas2 IDE and click the 'play/run' button. B1.7 behaves similarly to B1.6 for me - the IDE installer works but the gbr2 installer continues to lockup. Is there anything I can run to help capture what is going on when the gbr2 process is locking up? Some kind of a 'tail' command, or '-debug' option? Anything that can help capture what code is being run at the moment the gbr2 installer is searching for install media? Is it possible the gbr2 runtime is not synced with the actuall gambas2 installation? In other words, could they be different versions (IDE vs runtime)? @Newt: Try this load the gambas IDE Instead of clicking the play button, click on Project -> Make -> Executable This will create a brand new binary based off the current code. Once that is done, exit the IDE, and execute the new binary ./speedy.gambas > gui.log & See if that yields any better results |

I just found out we are not using the latest installer there after all. there are 3 different installer binaries in the speedy folder. Newt, can you chmod +x vinstall-ng,gambas.r938 and then run it from a terminal to confirm that it works or not? Hello, I attempted both methods mentioned below, and I had great expectations that one of them would work, but unfortunately neither fixed the issue. I even tried a standard CD install with no luck. However, after much playing and comparing 'ps ax' screens between the IDE and runtime I think I've determined my problem. I think it's directly related to my built-in/usb card reader. I kept noticing that the installer was hanging on the command: "sh -c parted /dev/sdd print | grep -i partition table: | cut -f2 d:" (each of these would then be listed individually in the processes immediately following the combined statement). After checking probedisk I determined that sdd, sde, sdf, sdg are individual slots on the card reader. With the installer running and stalled, I started killing the individual 'parted' processes and as I killed them a new but different statement would appear for a total of 2 parted statements per device. After killing the 8 processes (2 process for 4 devices), the throbber began spinning again and the installer continued by finding the CD. At this point I bailed out of the installation to report my findings. I guess the strangest part (to me) is why the IDE would run the installer normally but directly from the runtime would not. I did notice that when running the installer from the IDE a separate process (gbx2 -f -d .... /speedy --) would run the project. I guess this would indicate the the IDE runs the project itself while the runtime has to run a binary/compiled version?? More (possibly unnecessary) info: When I would manually run the command "parted /dev/sdd print" I would receive an error stating: "Error opening /dev/sdd: No medium found. Retry/Cancel?" When I would manually run the command "sh -c parted /dev/sdd print", the actual parted command interpreter would start up using /dev/hda and I would have to manually 'quit'. Hello All, Great news! That was a "3 birds with 1 stone" bug fix for me. 1) The installer no longer stalls. Fantastic! 2) I can no longer reproduce the bug where the installer loses the ability to find the install source. This bug could easily have been attributed to my card reader given the stalling issues I had been having. 3) I no longer see my ntfs drives as 'fuseblk' after using gparted. I did not attempt the full install due to time limitations this morning but was able to test these few issues. They all seem to be resolved on my end. Great work to all, and thanks for hanging in there to help me resolve these strange issues. Hopefully this will help at least a few people down the road. Cheers, newt |

Installed from burned discs on my laptop, 1.73GHz Celeron-M/1G RAM. System seems very sluggish. Installed gkrellm and a cpu monitor plugin. Not sure how accurate it is, but I get the impression that cpu scaling is backwards. When system is doing nothing, it shows 1733 MHz and single digits usage. As soon as I launch a heavy app, like amarok, cpu freq drops way down, showing alternating 216 and 433 MHz, with usage 99-100%. When application finally stabilizes, it returns to 1733 and 1-4% Very strange.
