First user on the system is now being added as UID 1002. This makes it almost unusable for me. Can we PLEASE go back to UID 1000 for first user? Keyboard layout settings are set correctly (from the selection made during install) for X, but not for console. In the KDE system settings/advanced section, anything that requires root access is greyed out, no option to enter root password to get access. Seamonkey is offered as an install choice in the selective install, but is not installed. The KDE powermanagement section reports problems, complaining that consolekit is not installed. While I've been able to get the screen effects to work, I made the mistake of activating them, making a change to the settings and then clicking on 'apply'. That locked X up completely - had to use Ctrl-Alt-Bkspace to kill X and start again. VasmCC has some video problems. See the attached images - the problem occurs after clicking on different selections from the left hand bar. |

All worked well for me but my hw is very linux friendly. I would be interested to see Newts report with his nvidia 5200 card. Only bug I have is there is no bg pic in root or users desktop. All else went very well for me...............this is looking more awesome as we progress. Hello All, I've finally had a chance to try out the new 1.40txz ISO with updated installer, and I must say this looks like a winner on my troublesome nvidia 5200 video card system. X started normally without any unnecessary user configuration, and I confirmed that the 'nv' driver was being used in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Overall, the install was painless and without many issues (a few minor but nothing major). Below are my notes: Installer: -initial installation media finding time was about 45+ seconds, with a many-second mouse freeze -subsequent 'search again' button presses were only 5-10 seconds each -the 'search again' button still kill the 2nd disc partitioning option ('use existing partitions') -when choosing partitions to use for system my drives show in reverse order (hdd, hdb, hda). I would expect them to be in alpha-order (hda, hdb, hdd, etc). -partition sizes show in Gparted differ from partition sizes show by Installer by enough to be noticeable. hda1 hda2 hda3 hda4 hda5 hda6 Gparted 96.97g 3.23g ---- 6.98g 454.94m 502m Installer 104g 3.46g ---- 7.49g 0.48g 526m It's not totally unrealistic but they are significantly different. Probably a 1000_vs_1024 thing??? -Flash of black when scroller starts -Grub detected my VL 6 STD install and added it to boot options (but problems - see below) First Boot: -Grub lists three options (soho, soho-recoverymode, 6Std) but upon choosing 6Std I get: Error: You need to load the kernel first -I tried moving the kernel line up the boot option order but then just received: Booting a command list Error: File not found. Login: -VL graphic wobbles still - not as much as before but a bit still. KDE: -Opera/wpa_gui/vburn-iso/browser all missing icons in KDE menu -VasmCC still needs updating in Filesystem, and Vpackager does not start This last comment is just an observation: During the installation routine I notice (in htop) that the scroller uses 5-6% CPU and 1% mem_usage throughout the entire install. Also, each time the scroller cycles around the CPU usage jumps to ~40% for several seconds. In the end, the scroller is the 2nd or 3rd most cpu time used process running. How this affects overall install time/speed, I don't know but thought I'd mention it. If the overall package installation time can be reduced significantly by "adjusting" the scroller I think it would be worth it, but if the overall improvements would be minor then no bother. Back to the Grub/VL6STD issue: I installed lilo to my STD partition bootsector (as a safeguard) and was able to use the grub commandline to chainload to lilo, and lilo was able to boot STD fine. In the end, none of this is a major issue or a show-stopper. This install was certainly the best I've tried. The VL GRUB/KDM/LOGIN themes look the best they ever have. There does not seem to be a KDE theme implemented yet, but I'm sure it'll be nice when it's done. Great job to all!!! Cheers, newt |

The only minor glitch I hit was at the ncurses resolution selection stage - the bottom of the box was overwritten by the load message for the trackpoint. Other than that, the install went without a hitch. MC seemed to work fine with the txz packages. Is there a package for 4.7.0pre3 available? I'd like to test using shell link, which I use a lot, and which has been broken in the recent svn versions I've tried. I notice that once installed, MC reverts to 4.6.2Pre1, not the version available during the install. All the X eye-candy works for me with this alpha - first time it has. I've got wobbly windows, workspaces on a cube, all very smart! The only thing I did have a bit of a problem with was playing films - I was getting some stuttering and odd speedups in places. May just be the Intel driver - it hasn't been good in recent versions of Xorg. I also found that after maximising the movie player (Dragon?), I lost all the window controls and ended up with X becoming unresponsive - had to use CTRL-ALT-BackSpace to kill X and restart it. I had to fiddle with mixer controls to get sound, but I've had to do that with most distros installed on the T61 - it looks as though the Alsa drivers for Intel HDA are not all there yet. Once I'd configured the switches (for some reason, speaker is never ticked), selected speaker, then unmuted the speaker option, sound works. I noticed that the Vcpufreq selection in VasmCC does nothing. I've also not tested Grub - I have a Grub legacy install that I use, so I skipped the boot loader and manually added the SOHO alpha to my /boot/grub/menu.lst. Other than that, looks very good indeed. I could almost grow to like KDE 4... paul. |

I've installed it in the alpha, and had no problems with it. I'm _really_ glad to say they seem to have fixed Fish. At least I was able to transfer files in both directions when logged into my NAS. I'll test it a bit more (probably install it in 6.0 Standard as well). On the alpha, a couple of other things. For reasons best known to the KDE developers, Konsole always starts as a login shell, so ~/.bashrc is not executed. It would be a good idea to source ~/.bashrc in ~/.bash_profile - that way things like aliases would be picked up. I also have a problem with ~/.bash_profile. It claims to set LANG using the keyboard selections made in the GUI installer. However, in my case, even though I selected a UK keyboard layout, LANG is being set as en_US. Not quite the desired result.... Another problem. For some reason, first user created in the alpha system is being given UID 1001 instead of the Slackware standard 1000. This is really annoying - I have multiple users (from multiple distros) sharing a home directory. All the other distros (including 6.0 Standard and 6.0 light) use 1000 as the first UID, so I'm able to share a number of things without problems. With the SOHO alpha, that sharing fails because of the changed UID. Can we please go back to starting user UIDs from 1000? So far, I've not hit any other problems with the new alpha - looking pretty good. paul. |

To add to the latest round of testing the latest iso, I installed it to a test box that has a recent Nvidia card. Two issues: 1) I can't log in as a regular user nor as root. 2) I wanted to install the proprietary Nvidia driver on the box, since I have a fairly modern Nvidia card. However, I got an error message that "make" was not found in the path. I chose a custom install, installing most of the stuff from both CDs, except for ATI-related stuff. Hello, -vlconfig2 installed twice during installation -clock is 75% out of desktop area at 1024x768. I would recommend a left-positioned location (perhaps just above kde menu) because at 800x600 the clock is well out of the desktop region. It requires the user to zoom out of the desktop, move it into the desktop region, and then zoom back in. -KDM LOGIN logo still wobbles in. I'd like to see it come in smooth and stable. -regional settings are preserved - works perfect! -VasmCC still needs some updating - particularly filesystem options All in all, I'd say remove the doubly installed vlconfig2, fix the clock and fix the KDM login wobbly logo, and we're set for a public alpha. VasmCC can be dealt with between alphas and betas (along with the TUI installer I presume). Seriously, this one it nearly flawless in a virtual environment. I even like the default background - it matches the newer logo color palette very well. Hello, Notes from a test install on real hardware: >> System: Intel Pentium D 2.8ghz (820), 3gb ram, dell deimension 9150, nvidia >> gf7300le, Acer X213w 2.16/22" monitor, multiboot system (4 hard drives: 3 >> sata, 1 ide), installed to ide -Attached is an image showing the sequence of what I saw when the initial screen resolution option is made prior to the gambas2 installer. The resolution options came up (left image), then a sequence of text spewed out leaving a garbled looking mess (center image). Fortunately, it is only cosmetic and by pressing the down arrow the options appeared in order and functional, but still garbled looking (right image). As is shown, the "spewed text" is my Teac card reader which has four slots thus the four devices (sdd/e/f/g). On the bright side, it does not break functionality of the resolution selection. I have not tested this machine since 1.15 but this did not happen back then. -The partition sequence is much better however my swap (hda3) drops to the bottom of the list, separated by several sdX devices. Again, only cosmetic - functionality is fine. -Bootloader Config: My windows partition /dev/sda1 is included as a boot menu option but the 'Label' is left blank. This might actually be 'by design' but a novice user might not know what this all means, and lilo won't allow an empty label. -Bootloader Config: LILO would not install. There was a duplicate '-cli' entry appended to lilo.conf. After removing the duplicate entry I was able to install lilo no problems. Is the duplicate entry because of the extra (windows) boot entry? I did not test grub at all on this system. -At the end of installation I rebooted, finished configuration using the proprietary nvidia driver, and was headed into KDM when I got stuck in a graphical/video problem. I would see the nvidia splash screen and then the screen would blink in-and-out about three times, and then I would see the nvidia splash screen again and the cycle repeated endlessly. I was never able to actually see KDM. I ended up having to hard reboot. I may give my other test system (nvidia 5200) a shot and see if it behaves the same. I'll let you know how it goes. Almost forgot: I notice that CD2 is still TLZ. I would have to say that I think I'm noticing a significant boost in installation performance with TXZ packages (i.e. a shorter installation time). It would be interesting to see if CD2 was any quicker at installation if they were TXZ packages. I'm sure this is a lot of work but thought I'd mention it. Lastly, when a TXZ package is installing I don't see other supplementary process running in htop but when a TLZ package is installing I see the unlzma process running alongside the tar process (I'm not 100% on this). The windows label comes from whatever os-prober returns.. I'd like you to re-do this installation and send me the resulting lilo.conf (unaltered) the one that causes the failure if you can please. About the swap partitions being at the bottom of the list. This is the way I designed it. I just have a thing about keeping swap partitions mixed in with other FS's in the system. Same reason there is a visual difference between a regular partition and a swap partition. I think they should stand out from the rest. |

Hello, I haven't forgot about this M0E... I've just been busy lately. I might have time tonight to give this a shot. Would you like me to repeat with 1.41txz like last time or should I use the updated 1.42txz isos (already downloaded)? You've probably already done something about the os-prober blank label issue, but if not then perhaps if os-prober returns an empty string then something as simple as 'unknown' could end up in the label field. The idea is that a label is better than no label since lilo will fail with no label. Even better might be if os-prober returns an empty string then a label indicating filesystem and/or partition (e.g. ntfs-sda1, vfat-hda1, etc.). Last, I actually have a bootable OSX partition (sdc1) - you can see it in the partition sequence jpeg I attached to a previous email. This was not detected by vinstaller at the bootloader section, and therefore was not a boot menu option. How do grub and lilo handle booting osx systems, if at all? I idea being that if a true mac user wanted to installed VL in a dual-boot scenario would lilo/grub leave them without a boot menu option to boot into OSX? Actually, uelsk8s ran into the same issue today. I think i got it fixed but it wouldnt hurt if you try it agan to make sure the peoblem is completely gone. The new iso's should work just as fine. Hello, Couple of quick notes: -Problem with duplicate '-cli' entry still exists for LILO in 1.44txz r910. Attached is the lilo.conf that was generated by the installer. I still have never tried GRUB on this system. -KDM would still not start (blinked in and out a couple of times showing nvidia splash screen, and then left me at a black screen with console mouse daemon - nothing else). I changed TTYs and 'startx' and KDE started no problem so the proprietary driver seems to be working fine. -The vxconf/resolution bug with spewed text is gone - yay! Cheers, newt |
