It seems to happen when I'm using the network (browser and/or the samba app). I had been lazy and skipped from 5.9.8.8 to -15, so I stepped back to -13 and tested it. Same problem. Will keep at it and see if I can detect a pattern. ________________________________________________________________________= Try Juno Platinum for Free! Then, only $9.95/month! Okay, it does not happen when I use the "vesa" video driver. Would it be more helpful if i keep stepping back in versions until it goes away, or would it be better to just keep playing with the "ati" driver? ________________________________________________________________________= Try Juno Platinum for Free! Roy, try running slapt-get --update and then slapt-get install x11 x11-devel and let me know if it does anything at all Thanks, Uel On 8/13/06, nig...@ju... <nig...@ju...> wrote: > > >> VLdynamite-5.9.8.15: > >> I'm having problems with my system becoming unresponsive using this > >> version. Uel, I tried that and problem persists. = Also tried the proprietary ATI driver and it locks up as well, but with one difference. The mouse cursor still responds, to movement only, not to clicks or mouseover effects. = Roy > try running > slapt-get --update > and then > slapt-get install x11 x11-devel > and let me know if it does anything at all >> VLdynamite-5.9.8.15: >> I'm having problems with my system becoming unresponsive using his >> version. Roy, This is a wierd one, I have been using xorgs ati driver with no problems at all, same with the proprietary ati driver. is your video card integrated? what chipset do you have on your system? Uel, Indeed it is weird. The system is a Pentimu 4-2.4 GHz with HyperThreading and Performance Acceleration Technology enabled on an Intel 875 Chipset. There is 2x512 Dual Channel DDR. Video Card is an add-in AGP ATI Radeon 9500. VL 5.1. = I put in an Nvidia GFMX400 and re-installed. Did not have the problem there. Maybe the card has gone bad. I will put it back in and install VL 5.1 to test it out. To bring up a different issue - one that has persisted since the first of the recent Dynamite iso's to be based on slack-current. The CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS settings need to be changed in /etc/profile.d/vasm.sh from "-mcpu=i686" to "-mtune=i686". Otherwise, anybody who builds programs will see an endless streak of warnings about how the -mcpu tag is deprecated. Thanks, John |

There must be something about the particular hardware combination that causes lockups on that machine with VLD. To be fair, my son used to overclock that Radeon 9500 Pro when it was his gaming card. Still, VL 5.1 runs without complaints on the same machine/dual boot. I am presently testing this version of VLD on a P-2.26/Intel 845G Chipset and a Radeon 9600 AGP (slot). No problems here.
