KDM user icons will not show unless you select an icon during user setup. Otherwise the installer assumes that you do not want to use icons. And, the theme has to support user icons... just a note that the final theme will support them. If you forget to select a user icon during installation, you can log in root @ KDM and open System Settings/Advanced tab/Login Manager/Users tab/ ..then under "User Image Source" and "User Images", you can select an icon for your users there and apply. The Blebd theme for desktop does look nice. I use on my desktop while testing. However, I am not able to duplicate the issues described while changing settings and themes. Perhaps some systems might need to logout after changes? The menu not showing up, might be due to graphics driver. Try using the 16 color mode instead of the 24 color mode during installation (or edit xorg.conf instead) to see if this brings back the menu. If this is the case, the classic menu will work for you via right click on the menu icon. |

About user icons, you can also set them up from "system settings" once you're loged in. KDM just has to be configured properly (I think it is now) to handle this, and of course, the theme has to support the icons. |

Hello Masta MCF, Thanks for the info about user account icons. I'm finishing up a test install right now and will choose a user icon to see if the problem resolves. There are two points of confusion that may have been tricking me the whole time: 1) When I get the user creation page. It actually shows a user icon in the button itself (i.e. little schoolboy with blue cap and red tie). I guess I've always assumed that would be the default user icon if the user doesn't change it. If that's not the case the perhaps that user icon preview should show a 'No Picture Selected' message instead to notify the user that there is in fact no user icon selected. 2) It's not totally obvious that the user icon button is actually a button. Don't get me wrong, _I_ know it's a button but it wouldn't expect that everyone would know it's a button. Perhaps some kind of indicator to that fact would be helpful (i.e. a raised look, a message to 'click here' to change icon, or simply a sentence in the 'Help' file for this page). I'll try to repeat the theme switching/kde menu breaking problem in this virtual test. If I can, then I'll try your suggestion on 16bit color mode. I'll also pay attention to this issue when I do more testing on real hardware to see if the problem persists. You're probably right, it's probably just a driver problem especially since I'm testing in vmware right now. Overall, it's not a big problem since a reboot fixed the issue until I messed with the themes again. Funny, what I ended up inadvertently doing last time was installing the KDE menu widget to the desktop though I didn't know it was there until I closes the widget installation window. The desktop KDE menu worked fine but the normal panel-docked kde menu did not. Well, maybe not so funny :D Cheers, newt -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Thursday, September 10, 2009, 11:35:36 AM, you wrote: MM> KDM user icons will not show unless you select an icon during user setup. Hello Masta, Thanks again for you help. Once I explicitly selected a user icon they worked, at least the user icon worked - no root icon. I tried to duplicate the issue relating to changing themes and cannot. Perhaps it was just a fluke, or something in KDE 4.3.0, or a combination of various things. Regardless, it's working as expected now! Also, I had reported that sound was not working in my previous 1.24 install attempt. For whatever reason, it's working this time just like it always had. I don't put a ton of faith in the virtual testing scenario due to the obvious reasons - it's not real hardware. So when something like this happens (ie. it doesn't work but next time it does) I just assume it's a virtual-bug :D Thanks again!
