Some actions, suggestions and opinions regarding the package lists on iso and repo (NA = not available): DONE: - arts: renamed to vl58, moved to extra/libs/ - xmms-jack: move to extra/x-apps/ - requiredbuilder (was dup): deleted from packages/dev/, left in extra/dev/ - xfce4-weather-plugin (should have been included in iso): moved to extra/xfce/ SUGGESTIONS: - jasper (gyachi dep, should have been removed from iso): PACKAGE NA - raptor (ardour, jack, liblrdf, hidrogen dep, should have been removed from iso): in testing/ - liblrdf (ardour, jack-rack dep, should have been removed from iso): PACKAGE NA - motor: (still vl6 on iso, should have been renamed): OK on repo - ndiswrapper (rename so kernel version is part of basename (suggestion: ndiswrapper_2.6.18.5-version-arch-build.tlz), otherwise package version management, deps and updating will be hell) OPINIONS: ARGH!: - fix db package names on repo (Slackware only has db4 and db44, not db42, don't know about db3) - VL5.8-initscripts-noarch-4vl58 (rename to initscripts if all or vlinitscripts if only VL custom ones, right now basename is VL5.8 and inistscripts (or previously initscipts) is part of version!) Hi, for reasons not worth mentioning, I usually have my username assigned with a uid other than 1001. Because of that, many times I come accross issues caused by files owned by uid 1001 instead of root, but where the situation is transparent if you are running as root or uid 1001. So I think it could be a good practice to have devs, or at least some of them, using an uid other than the default. I am sure it will make some annoyances crop up earlier in the dev cycle, reducing the volume of bug to track in the in the betas/RCs. just an idea. best regards. |

from those I would prefer #2 I think a good mix of those could be - the logo size from #2 - the simple background design from #3 - the bkg color from #3 modded down in brightness and saturation, if you excuse the example, colores closer to the basket icon in the screenshots. Btw, with all due respect, the way "VectorLinux" was... err... used in some of the recent default wallpapers [the /\ thing] really breaks apart from what should be the 'official' logo. Hey, sorrry for the sequel, it s the first time I got network running on 5.8x so I am finding stuuf as I use it. There is another issue with opera, wich is the profile in skel with user permissions instead of root, on top of retaining last user's history it is preventing me from customizing things like the button bars, altough I could install a new skin... anyway, should be owned by root in skel. |

Hi there, I am posting here instead of the forum to keep a low profile on this. The start page in Opera is set to Vector's distrowatch page, and while I understand the desire to have a better rank possition I think it will only give Vl bad press. It has happened in the recent past with gentoo nad some other distro, and the issue does show up eventually. Also, Ladislav from DW is a nice guy and rather fond of VL, so he will probably resent it if we engage in this practice. I havent look into the others browsers. Just IMO. regards. UK. |

This is peculiar. The calendar seems to be working for me with the latest 1.0.6 package, 5.8 RC2. I was able to create about half a dozen events. The only flakiness was that all-day events tend to be set for the day before the date you select. I tested by using "New Event" button ... and also by clicking the date, both of which brought up the dialogue. Admittedly, I've been mainly using 1.1b without calendar for several months, so I may be missing something that would be seen in more constant use. Re non-calendar builds, how many people are seeing this? If it's a common problem, perhaps building without calendar would be a good idea. However, maybe also having a calendar build available for others? Another issue, which I think is now fixed, is the breakage caused by the reporter tool when using language packs. Previously, installing a language pack often caused the dreaded "grey bar" problem. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=301842 http://users.skynet.be/fa258499/faq.html#reportererror I've tested with a few language packs on 1.0.6 without problems. Anyone want to double-check? I think it's important that we know this bug is fixed, since it sometimes effectively renders SM "en-US only." If necessary, SM could be built without reporter. best, incognu Quoting "Jose J. Er, um, not to crosspost here as well as on the sm package thread, but I think the seamonkey duplicate kmenu problem may have been more due to my somehow having both seamonkey.desktop and seamonkey-browser.desktop files to be copied to /usr/share/applications. Corrected in latest build -- though I see from the template (thanks, Joe1962) that I should have kept seamonkey-browser.desktop instead of seamonkey.desktop. I also included JohnB316's suggestion of editing the xfce helper items. No sm .desktop entries are going into /opt/kde/share/applications (or anywhere in /opt/kde, as far as I can see). I'm seeing the duplicate gtk-qt-engine entries in KDE's Control Centre, though, both with KDE 3.5 (originally) and with KDE 3.4.2. best, incognu Quoting "Jose J. I've just uploaded a new seamonkey package. I think the problem with the duplicate kde menu entries was caused by having both a seamonkey.desktop and a seamonkey-browser.desktop copied into /usr/share/applications. In this build, I removed seamonkey-browser.desktop and left seamonkey.desktop in. After uninstalling the previous build and installing this one, there is now only one seamonkey-browser entry in the kmenu. I'm still not seeing the seamonkey icons in KDE's kmenu (however, someone with kde 3.5 needs to check this, as I'm using kde 3.4.2). (I compiled and packaged before looking at Joe1962's template ... I think I should have kept seamonkey-browser.desktop and discarded seamonkey.desktop instead.) I also edited both helper desktop entries, seamonkey-browser.desktop and seamonkey-mailer.desktop, to include "NotShowIn=KDE" as the last line, as recommended by John. Appears okay in xfce as well. best, incognu |

They are in /usr/share/xfce4/helpers/ and have a "Type=X-XFCE-Helper". Are you adding specific .desktop files within the /opt/kde/... structure? I left the seamonkey .desktop files in /usr/share/applications/ visible for KDE so we would not need to add them specifically, since it should pick them up from there. I'm adding to this email the seamonkey "template" I mentioned earlier in the thread, but without eurynome.jar and newsfox.jar, to keep it down in size. These 2 files would go in /opt/seamonkey/lib/seamonkey-version_number/chrome/. Regards, Joe1962 |

As incognu mentioned in the Seamonkey packaging thread, the Internet Suite menu item shows up twice in KDE. I have confirmed this on my own box as well. When writing any XFCE helpers, aka .desktop files, please include the following line in them: NotShowIn=KDE When this line appears in a .desktop file, the item will not appear in the KDE menu. Going on a tangent here, if you have the gtk-qt-engine built against KDE 3.5.4/3.5.5 installed on VL 5.8, you'll see GTK Themes and Fonts appear twice in the KDE Control Center. This is because there is a clone of the KDE menu item in /usr/share/applications. That item does need to be there, but it should not be visible in KDE. It's there mainly for use with Gnome or other DE's. I think I need to file a bug report at the home page of the gtk-qt theme engine so that this issue is fixed on their end. Until the author fixes this, the fix is actually easy to add to the build script in the form of a sed command. Cheers, John |

A little experimenting ... I replaced KDE 3.5 with 3.4.2, uninstalled sm 1.0.6 and 1.0.5, then reinstalled sm 1.0.6. Again, there were duplicate entries for the SeaMonkey-Browser, but this time, the icons weren't being picked up ... checked and they're present in /usr/share/pixmaps. Everything is correct in xfce (no duplicates, all icons showing). incognu Quoting John B <joh...@gm...>: > On 11/12/06, incognu <in...@in...> wrote: >> >> Quoting John B <joh...@gm...>: >> >> > Guys, >> > >> > A possible reason for the two Seamonkey entries in the KDE K menu is >> that >> > KDE is apparently picking up the XFCE helper that was devised to work >> with >> > the XFE file manager. Guys, A possible reason for the two Seamonkey entries in the KDE K menu is that KDE is apparently picking up the XFCE helper that was devised to work with the XFE file manager. It may need to be edited so that it doesn't show up in KDE. ;-) Incognu, if you can send me your SSH public key off list, I want to give you access to the VL upload repository so that your package (and any future Seamonkey builds) can be uploaded to it.
