I suspected as much. ATI is going in the right direction with their drivers, 
but fglrx is still troublesome. I have one old Radeon 9500, which I did test, 
and it would not work for me either. My son modded and overclocked this 
card back in the days when it was the hot thing around, so I hesitated to 
blame the driver without further testing. 

If it needs tweaking and fiddling to get working, it's out of the LiveCD.
