Ok, my KDE troubles were combined from two things: weird ownership on
~/.Xdefaults and 8600GT running on outdated "nv" driver from Xorg
1.4.2.

So I downloaded drivers from nVidia - but wtf? Two CDs, but no
kernel-headers. That's really bad.
