are you sure proc is not mounted?
check /proc/mounts
anyway it is mounted for me
also 2 things quit working and I would appreciate your help tracking them
down
1)valsaconf doesnt detect sound cards anymor but alsaconf does  (in
5.9.8.9we moved valsaconf to
valsaconf.old and symlinked valsaconf to alsaconf)
2)checkinstall -L    checkinstall -G still works??
