No

hi, i used to use virtual dub many many years ago and now i found that i need to use it again, but one feature that used to be (for me personally) the most important feature no longer seems to work. i used to open recorded tv programs (avi file format) and cut the commercials out and save the file with the direct stream copy feature. the file size was always a little smaller due to the missing commercials in the file and that was perfect but no longer works ... why not? ... unfortunatly it does not work in virtual dub 1 or virtual dub 2 ... this is really a shame.

i do not want to spend hours looking for the right codec and setting up some options, because it is a waste of my time. all i want to do is open file, delete commercials and save file without commercials. is there nothing that can be done here to get something basic and simple like that running again?

the error message i get in virtual dub 2 is:

direct stream copy cannot be used with this video stream, you may want to select different input driver

i looked in the file information and found the following (i have no idea about codecs and stuff like that):

avi (audio video interleaved)
808 kb/sec (bitrate)
mpeg4 (video codec)
mp3 (audio codec)

if someone really wants to improve a quick and easy program like virtual dub or virtual dub 2 then focus your energy on some daft twit like me just wanting to open a file, edit a file and save the file without changing anything in any parameters. ... that is so terrible that this will not work.

i guess i will look for an alternative and yet again forget about virtual dub, which is a shame because it was simple, fast and easy back in the day.

kind regards

Befor opening your file make sure to change Input Driver: Open Using: Audio/Video interleave input driver (internal). And VDub will behave exactly as before: Enable DSC but won't open a lot of newer video file formats (ie: MKV)

If I remember well, with VD1/VD2, direct stream copy is only available for .avi files & I think must have a FPS fix & not variable... For other like mp4/mkv, you need to re-encoded all the video(/audio)...

But for mkv, you can do a direct copy with a another old VD which is called VirtualDubMod! That's a very long time I didn't used it but if I remember well it's "only" compatible with FFDShow codec, If you use LAV that will break maybe/surely... But if you want to cut all ads, that will be a part between 2 keyframes & so example:
    - 00h10mn ads1 starting with a keyframe
    - 00h15mn ads1 ending & then movie action1 start to 5mn until next ads2 at 00h20mn
    - but the next keyframe after the keyframe from the ads1 was in the middle of the movie action1
    - & so if you cut it, you will lose 2mn30s of the movie action1

If not, I used it before, but you can try to search input plugins (not input codec but truely a input extention files) to all VD, I know there was but today it's maybe difficult to find it...

      1-"video" >direct streem copy. 2-"file" >export>streem copy. 2gb-4sec.
