That’s a really detailed explanation about VcXsrv — super helpful for anyone setting up GUI apps from Unix on Windows. I’ve been using a Calculator Tool alongside it to manage resource usage, and it actually makes the process way smoother!

Strange how I read it knowing it was from German before I'd read that it was translated from German...

VcXsrv is an X-Server for Windows. To start the graphical (GUI) version of programs (e.g. xstata = X Windows version of STATA) on Unix servers (e.g. of the bwHPC network) under Windows, you need an X-Server installed on your local computer (e.g. when running through Putty, Kitty, Smartty or other ssh-forwarding terminal or, in Windows 10, as X-Server Host for the Linux Subsystem).

The task of the X-Server is to send keyboard and mouse inputs to the client program (e.g. xstata) and to accept the graphical output (screen display).

And can serve therefore as a graphical Linux X-Server in Windows as a client for portforwarding to say it less technically.

Don't be confused by the unusual "client-server terminology": from xstata's point of view, the X-Server provides ("serves") keyboard and mouse inputs; from the point of view of the X-Server, xstata is a client that is "operated" with these entries.
