Recently my media keys (keyboard buttons to play, pause, skip back and forward songs) seem to be unresponsive when I run vcxsrv. Not exactly sure what's going on, but I wanted to make this post in case others are experiencing the same issue too.

A few potentially relevant observations:

  • Recently I've upgraded vcxsrv to the latest version. I seem to remember that this wasn't an issue on the older version.
  • It seems my media keys work when I boot up Windows, but then at one point they stop working. I suspect this coincides with me launching vcxsrv for the first time, but I haven't verified that for sure. This might be the lowest hanging fruit for me to verify next.
  • The strange thing is, the media key brokenness persists even after I quit vcxsrv.
  • To clarify: I don't want to send the media keys over to the X server (WSL), I want to use them to control Spotify on Windows.
  • Volume up and down keys still work as expected.

Could you also verify it doesn't reproduce with previous tag?

Nevermind, seems to be a false alarm, guys. It seems chrome (or more likely a chrome extension) is hijacking my media keys. I'll investigate further.

Mistery solved: it was the Google Play Music extension. The strange thing was that its hijacking didn't show up in the proper settings section where keyboard shortcuts are supposed to be listed. Disabling the extension restored sanity. Case closed.
