Hi all, I have done a small valgrind tool that tests each result of a floating point operation agains inf and nan values. I have written that tool to find problems in some simulation codes at a customer here. Also I used that last weekend to find similar problems in Flightgear (an open source flight simulation). So one might ask if the work of this tool could be done by the usual floating point traps. The problem with the hardware traps is that they are asyncronous. That means you get them a little later than when the problem happens - I believe at the next fpu instruction past the error. Which means that you sometimes get a usable hint where the problem is but sometomes you get signaled somewhere completely different. That tool prooved to be much more useful since it really points you to the *exact* source code line where the problem happens. I would like to know if there is any chance to get such a tool into the public valgrind tree. And if so, what to do to get that stuff reviewed, contributed ... You're both right. There's now a single file dealing with this stuff, cachegrind/cg-x86-amd64.c, which is used by both Cachegrind and Callgrind. Nick |

I think I was mis-remembering - what I was thinking of was the fact that x86 and amd64 used to be more or less exact duplicates of each other in cachegrind but they have now been merged. As far as I remember, Callgrind (since its merge) always pulled in the detection of cache parameters from Cachegrind, as this was nicely separated from the rest of the code. Just a remark about the comment... AFAIK, the term "sectored" means on Intel processors a simple kind of hardware prefetching, where memory is partitioned into "sectors" consisting of 2 adjacent memory blocks the size of a cache line. When one memory block of a sector is fetched into the cache because of a load instruction, the other memory block of the sector is prefetched. This is a very simple stream prefetching heuristic, both for upwards and downwards streams. This has the consequence that for code doing sequential load accesses, it looks like the cache has a line size of 128 byte (instead of the real 64 byte), also when looking at performance counters. Please correct me if I am wrong... Josef > > Tom > |

Log:
Unmap the vdso as well as suppressing it by dropping the auxv
entry as on some systems the vdso will be at a random address
and can conflict with things like wine that need to tightly
control where things are mapped.

This reduces the extra overhead of --smc-check=all when running
Memcheck from about 75% to about 45%.

Hmm, I can believe that. I don't think I considered the was-Possible-now-Reachable-so-recategorise-children case. If the old code got it right I suspect it was as much luck as anything else. > Any suggestions on a fix? Two possibilities off the top of my head: - When a block is upgraded from Possible to Reachable, rescan children. - Reconsider the categorisations. Ie. in case 7 in this part of the documentation: http://www.valgrind.org/docs/manual/mc-manual.html#mc-manual.leaks should BBB be considered "Possibly Lost" or something else? Can you file a bug report and assign it to me? And mark it as a 3.5.1 blocker? (Nb: you can only mark something as a blocker after you've filed it.) N |

Hi, guys! As you might know there has been work going on in the FreeBSD community to port Valgrind to FreeBSD OS. Currently thanks to efforts of a lot of developers we have a working preliminary port done. Althought a lot of work has to be done yet, it is in a good shape now and fairly usable on both amd64 and i386 platforms. I'd love to work with someone from the community on integrating our patches to the main tree to avoid excessive merge conflicts in the future. There have been a lot of changes so that work will require a good amount of time and coordination. Is it possible? How do we proceed? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks! -- Stanislav Sedov ST4096-RIPE |
