Date: 2009-08-25 18:34:58 +0100 (Tue, 25 Aug 2009)
New Revision: 10867
Log:
Renamed the function VG_(have_proc_filesystem)() into
VG_(is_procfs_mounted)(). The old name was derived from the name
of the preprocessor macro HAVE_PROC while the new name is a more
accurate description of what this function does.

Today the selected function usually has a global name with STT_FUNC type, but it is something such as '__GI_strcmp', or something which designates its usage: "I am the strcmp which uses SSE4.2", "I am the strcmp which uses SSSE3", etc. In the future the selected function could be anonymous except for full debuginfo. -- |

So we'd have to intercept calls to the the STT_IFUNC version of strlen, and get them to return the address of our own strlen implementation. Yes? That's pretty sucky. I wonder if there's a cleaner way to do it. (thinks more ..) So there are N different versions of strlen selected at run time, not just one. So why can't we simply intercept calls to all of them? We don't care which one ld.so would actually have selected. JJ, can you help us out here? Do you have a plan for fixing this for Valgrind on F12 ? J |

Right? Not exactly - an STT_IFUNC symbol for strlen will be expected to point at the address of a routine that returns the address of the real strlen routine, rather than pointing directly at the address of a strlen routine. Yes. glibc no longer defines a symbol 'strlen' with type STT_FUNC. Instead the symbol is 'strlen' with type STT_IFUNC. So the name has the wrong "flavour" as far as get_elf_symbol_info (coregrind/m_debuginfo/readelf.c; etc.) is concerned. So memcheck's redirection is blind to this new strlen, so &__GI_strlen gets installed into the PLT, and never redirected as far as memcheck is concerned. There is a symbol 'strlen@@GLIBC_2.0' which the runtime dynamic linker ld*.so will find *if* the request is for 'strlen' with the _explicit_ symbol version GLIBC_2.0 (or for "strlen with the latest version" because the double at sign '@@' means "default version".) However, nearly all executables ask for only 'strlen' with no explicit version. This means _implicitly_ "the most recent version", and when requested via PLT lookup then ld*.so chooses to bend the semantics slightly by satisfying this request with the symbol 'strlen' with type STT_IFUNC, calling it, and putting the value returned into the PLT. Thus the new type STT_IFUNC, if present, takes precedence over the '@@' default version. So with STT_IFUNC then the runtime dynamic linker has implemented another redirection mechanism of its own. [The PLT itself is a redirection mechanism.] memcheck must learn (and benefit from) the new symbol type STT_IFUNC. -- |

Hi, Snow Leopard (Mac OS 10.6) is coming out this Friday. So our crappy 64-bit Mac support is about to get a lot more use, because almost all built-in apps will be 64-bit and I think 64-bit will even be the default for compilation. The main problem with our 64-bit support is that it's *really* slow to start-up, eg. Hello World takes about 4 seconds on my MacBook Pro. This is because the Valgrind-on-Darwin start-up sequence involves mmaping large chunks of the address space, and on 64-bit this is obviously a bigger task than on 32-bit. (Valgrind-on-Linux doesn't doe these mmaps, which is why there is no corresponding slow-down on 64-bit LInux.) Well, at least we had one whole week where Valgrind provided good support on Mac... N |

Hi, The next release of glibc (due in some weeks) implements a new symbol type STT_IFUNC. This symbol type facilitates choosing at runtime a software variant that may run faster/better/etc. on a specific processor. The mechanism is: call the STT_IFUNC function; it returns the address of the actual function which should be used on the current processor. The caller typically puts the returned address of the optimized function into the Program Linkage Table (PLT). The first uses include i686 and x86_64 to choose among the serial/speculative/sseN implementations of strlen, strcmp, etc. Because memcheck-3.5.0 does not understand STT_IFUNC, then memcheck complains for the speculative overfetching of the default choice for many str* subroutines. As seen on the alpha release of Fedora 12 (due in the next 24 hrs), output looks like: ==2471== Invalid read of size 8 ==2471== at 0x81C0EBA: __GI_strcmp (strcmp.S:100) -- |

I had noticed that gcc 4.3.2 did rightfully complain about the statement on line 138 of coregrind/launcher-linux.c, but gcc 4.4.1 did not. So I started searching the Valgrind source code for other format attribute declarations, and noticed that other format attribute declarations were present at the end of the function declaration instead of the beginning. The above comment might have been a too quick conclusion however. Bart. |

Overall I'm in favour of the changes you suggest (making less use of VG_(printf)). But I'd prefer not to rename it to VG_(something_so_totally_obscure_youd_never_think_to_use_it). How about VG_(dprintf), the d to emphasise it's debuggingness? I think dprintfs are a fairly widely understood thing. J |
