Hi all I've been looking at https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=445743 "The impossible happened: mutex is locked simultaneously by two threads" while using mutexes with priority inheritance and signals. I did think that there might be a bug in the client code since the man page says that pthread_mutex_lock can fail with EINVAL The mutex was created with the protocol attribute having the value PTHREAD_PRIO_PROTECT and the calling thread's priority is higher than the mutex's current priority ceiling. but looking more closely I don't think that PTHREAD_PRIO_INHERIT can fail with EINVAL. I do get EINVAL on FreeBSD though. The mutex mechanisms used by both Linux and FreeBSD seem failrly similar. * mutex variable initialized to 0 * first locker just uses an atomic compare and swap to set the mutex to one * if there is a second locker, fall back to the kernel (futex or _umtx_op) Here are some traces (with null grind, trimmed a bit for brevity) thread created sleeping PJF: main sleeps SYSCALL[4696,1](230) sys_clock_nanosleep( 0, 0, 0x1ffefffce0, 0x0 ) --> [async] ... PJF: main sleep ends SYSCALL[4696,1](230) ... [async] --> Success(0x0) signalling SYSCALL[4696,1](234) sys_tgkill ( 4696, 4697, 62 ) --> [async] ... SYSCALL[4696,1](234) ...
