Hello, I asked this a few days ago on IRC but only got little feedback, so I'd like to post my proposal here again. For my research institute, I'm maintaining a Valgrind plugin. As it is Lua-scriptable, it allows the users to control the plugin conveniently. In general, everything is fine. Lately, I received a request by one of the users to expose more information about local and global variables that can be extracted from the debugging symbols. So far, there is get_data_description() in pub_tool_debuginfo.h. It reads all the data we need but the only way to extract it all is to parse any created string. This is not very efficient and has a bad coupling (as seen from the user). We discussed to patch Valgrind. To give you an idea of what I created for our internal purposes, please have a look at this patch: https://gist.github.com/MarcelHB/8666443 get_data_description_di() is basically a duplicate of get_data_description(), but instead of filling a string I copy the interesting things into a struct. In general, that works. But this way, the purely duplicated code is not elegant and bad to maintain while not risiking to break existing specs. So it's much more about the idea to allow plugins to get debug info in a better way than a pre-printed string. What do you think about implementing it in one or another way? Thanks, Marcel |
