Um, I wasn't aware this patch existed. What bugzilla number tracks this? My (permanent) concern is adding support for instructions without test cases, since it's exceedingly difficult to track down subtle errors without test cases. See https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=245925#c3 for a sorry tale. So I've taken to fixing any such case that turns up in the wild, or has a regtest to exercise it. Anyway .. if you have a patch + test case then I will be very happy to push that into trunk, + into 3_7_BRANCH if anybody reports it as a failure in practice. J |

Yes, completely correct .. caused by brain-dead-ness at this end. > Note also that the location for FIFO files can be specifically chosen > with the Valgrind command line option --vgdb-prefix. Ah, ok. I'll fix the typo and add a comment about --vgdb-prefix (probably on Monday). J |

Log:
Rewrite test to not use function clock_gettime. The purpose
of this is to not have to link against -lrt because that causes
a different back-trace on certain x86 and s390x environments.
See the thread with subject
"helgrind/tests/cond_timedwait_invalid failing on x86"
on valgrind-developers for more details.

I don't know what's changed (since the gdbserver tests had run > quite well on Fedora the last I tried), but I had major problems. The testcases > either hung or failed the pre-req because gdb.step does not exist. sigh.... I suspect you might encounter two different problems. First the gdb.step that does not exist: -------------------------------------- 'make regtest' calls 'gdbserver_tests/make_local_links /path/to/gdb' make_local_links tries to extract the gdb version from the gdb --version first line. Then depending on the gdb version, the gdb.step file is created to indicate that gdb properly implements 'step command', otherwise, gdb.step is removed. gdb.step should always be created for gdb version >= 7.0, except on ARM where gdb version must be >= 7.1. So, if there is no gdb.step on fedora16/ppc64, it might be that the way make_local_links extracts the version does not work properly with the gdb on fedora16/ppc. Can you send me the result of gdb --version? Second the hanging tests: ------------------------- even if gdb.step is not created, that should just disable some tests. It should not create hanging tests. What I have often seen on ppc systems is that the standard visible gdb is a 32 bits gdb, which cannot debug the 64 bits executable. This can then cause the test to block. I just regained access to the gcc38 ppc gcc farm system. This is what I have on this system: philippe@ps3gccfarm:~/valgrind/trunk_untouched$ /usr/bin/gdb gdbserver_tests/t GNU gdb (GDB) 7.0.1-debian ..... "/home/philippe/valgrind/trunk_untouched/gdbserver_tests/t": not in executable format: File format not recognized (gdb) quit With a gdb I compiled myself in 64 bits: philippe@ps3gccfarm:~/valgrind/trunk_untouched$ /home/philippe/gdb/gdb-7.3.1/install/bin/gdb gdbserver_tests/t GNU gdb (GDB) 7.3.1 ... Reading symbols from /home/philippe/valgrind/trunk_untouched/gdbserver_tests/t...done. (gdb) I got another failure reason on this gcc38 system: vgdb relay application is taking a lock on a file to ensure it is the only one doing a relay with the Valgrind process using this file. For a yet not clear reason, the lock cannot be taken on gcc38 when the file is accessed through nfs. (if the file is local, the lock can be taken). I will do some more testing with an nfs tomorrow. But if this is your problem, the symptom will be vgdb writing the following error msg (and then failing) syscall failed: No locks available cannot acquire lock. The failure of vgdb will block the test (but the error msg above should be visible in one of the *.out test output file). If the blocking is not one of the above causes, then the output files of the tests (filtered and unfiltered, cfr previous mail) might allow me to investigate. Hope this helps Philippe |

Seeing this patch go by reminds me that I'd noticed a similar
seemingly incorrect set of constrains for the versions of the add.w
and sub.w instructions that take another register and an optional
shift rather than an immediate. I'm still working on an appropriate
test suite addition (it's slow going since I only have software
emulators).
If no-one besides me has run into it yet, I was guessing that my
change wasn't important enough to rush into 3.7, but I'm appending it
below in case anyone wants to take a look; it will be in Bugzilla in
the future.

I do not understand the difference between the device' and 'the Android device'.
Isn't it rather something like:
' (on the Android device, not on the Android NDK development host).' ?
Note also that the location for FIFO files can be specifically chosen
with the Valgrind command line option --vgdb-prefix.

On 10/25/2011 03:29 AM, Julian Seward wrote: > If you have a change that you think > should get merged, please let me know. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=276897#c7 contains a patch for faster dispatching and for better TT_FAST caching in ARM mode. It is derived from the earlier patch which also supports armv5/armv6. The new patch omits the changes associated with armv5/armv6 support, and so the resulting code still requires armv7 or above, just like the current VALGRIND_3_7_BRANCH. Thus the c7 patch aims to provide speed benefits without meddling in the issue of hardware support. Because I have only armv5te, then I cannot test the new patch. But if other developers do run the tests and the tests PASS, then I believe this is an appropriate candidate for merging. -- |

This testcase is failing on x86-linux due to an additional reported problem:
+Thread #x's call to pthread_cond_wait failed
+ with error code 22 (EINVAL: Invalid argument)
+ at 0x........: pthread_cond_wait_WRK (hg_intercepts.c:...)
+ by 0x........: pthread_cond_wait@* (hg_intercepts.c:...)
+ by 0x........: main (tc23_bogus_condwait.c:72)
+
That seems reasonable to me given that on line 69 we do
r= pthread_cond_wait(&cv, (pthread_mutex_t*)(4 + (char*)&mx[0]) );
which may modify cv in some bogus way. The same cv is used on line 72
causing the EINVAL. But I'm no expert on pthreads. Not sure whether my
analysis is correct.
Assuming the above is valid, can the testcase be rewritten to avoid the
additional complaint? Perhaps by using a separate condition variable for
the bogus mutex test on line 69?
I would prefer to not have an additional exp file if it can be avoided.

Actually, the way the testcase is written it does require linking
against -lrt. Otherwise, function clock_gettime will not be found.
When I was debugging it yesterday, I had compressed the testcase and
eliminated the clock_gettime call.
The testcase came into existence in r12164 calling clock_gettime on
all platforms.
In r12213 Bart made the testcase work on Darwin with this patch:
+
+#ifdef HAVE_CLOCK_GETTIME
assert(clock_gettime(CLOCK_REALTIME, &abstime)==0);
+#else
+ abstime.tv_sec = time(NULL) + 2;
+ abstime.tv_nsec = 0;
+#endif
Reading through the man pages suggests that we should be able to use the
#else clause on Linux as well and thereby eliminate the need for -lrt.
I'm suggesting this patch:
