So apparently this isn't enough, at least for my Ubuntu 10.04 based setup; I also applied the attached patch to avoid some formatting macros in <title> elements; the build would die with cryptic messages without this patch (see generated index.log for the gory details). With the patch, I can make dist but distcheck fails with: cat: exp-ptrcheck.supp: No such file or directory cat: xfree-3.supp: No such file or directory cat: xfree-4.supp: No such file or directory cat: glibc-2.X-drd.supp: No such file or directory cat: glibc-2.34567-NPTL-helgrind.supp: No such file or directory I filed https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=232509 to track the doc build issue and https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=232510 for the distcheck one. -- Loïc Minier |

The "break", "next", "step" and similar commands for gdbserver are implemented by adding calls to a dirty helper. This dirty helper executes the gdbserver code so that gdb can "remotely" debug. In such a case, gdb can add new breaks or single step or ... The translations for the blocks of these breaks or the single step-ped blocks are discarded with VG_(discard_translations). I am somewhat amazed that it works properly, but it seems to work properly, even for single stepping in a block. I guess this is working because a dirty helper call causes an exit from the generated code to the host machine, and so whatever translation can be discarded as none are currently running when the dirty helper executes. Is that a correct assumption ? |

Hmm replying to myself, I came across README_PACKAGERS which says: -- Don't strip the debug info off lib/valgrind/$platform/vgpreload*.so in the installation tree. Either Valgrind won't work at all, or it will still work if you do, but will generate less helpful error messages. [...] -- Don't strip symbols from lib/valgrind/* in the installation tree. Doing so will likely cause problems. Removing the line number info is probably OK (at least for some of the files in that directory), although that has not been tested by the Valgrind developers. It sounds as if I might be able to strip some of the debug info for some of the files under lib/valgrind and debug info from bin/* for the rare binaries in there. This seems risky and would probably save a limited amount of space, so I wont do that. -- Loïc Minier |
