But what's not yet clear to me is whether ptrcheck detects subtraction of unrelated pointer values ? This is a relatively common error. Only in exceptional cases it makes sense to subtract unrelated pointer values, e.g. for defining an order relation in a sorted container like std::map<T*>. Bart. |

Yes, since the handler (do_subW) is derived from Annelid's. But now looking at do_subW (h_main.c:3043) it looks like it produces BOTTOM for ptr - ptr. /me confused ... The stuff in README.ABOUT.PTRCHECK.txt is intended as end-user documentation, so I didn't want to go into detailed explainations about how the two subtools work; hence no mention of ptr-differencing in the heap-check part of the doc. Yes, which isn't good. When I merge this lot into the trunk I plan to add a configure time test, --enable-profile-heap, to avoid that. I guess it would be possible (and ideal) to not have a configure time test, and simply have the block layout chosen (with/without the extra overhead) chosen dynamically at startup. Sounds a bit complex, and requires parsing the command line args before m_mallocfree is started for the first time. J |

But in practice lots of programs do pointer differencing, so presumably you handle that (Annelid did)? N |

Yes, but I think it's really difficult. You might find http://csl.stanford.edu/%7Echristos/publications/2008.safedbt.hpca.pdf interesting, it describes an approach for this that uses transactional memory. How well it works depends greatly on how inherently parallel the Valgrind tool's actions are. Nick |
