Doing it at compile time would be
better...however...there's many times I'm helping someone
and out of curiousity we run valgrind, libsafe, or electric
fence to see what's going on with the binary.

There will always be a need for tools that do not require
getting the source code just to check out a misbehaving
application. You also may not have the source code if its a
commercial app. You could still check it out and send a
better bug report.
