I tried the new --gdb-command= option, setting it
to a shell script containing
   DISPLAY=x.y.z.w:0.0 xterm -e gdb "$@"
and it worked nicely.  I'll try the other option next.
I've already posted an interesting stack dump to de...@op... using this.

+1 for getting this into the upcoming release of valgrind!
