In the longer run it would be nice to completely redesign the virtual CPU stuff, so that multiple architectures could be supported. The compiler technology for that kind of thing is well established. However, doing so would require substantial hacking input over a sustained period of time, and is not something that anyone can viably do in their spare time. So the prospects are not good.
