The way I learned about vector clocks was via attending a presentation about the subject. If you're reading about vector clocks, then probably it's also interesting to know what a matrix clock is. I didn't read it yet, but maybe this paper or one of its citations is also interesting: http://www.cs.uic.edu/~ajayk/ext/DC2004.pdf . I hope you have some background in partial orders ?
