utthesis 1.05

This package provides a "style file" for producing Ph.D. dissertations
at POLITEHNICA University of Timisoara using the new version of LaTeX,
LaTeX2e which is now the only officially supported one. (If
you haven't upgraded to it yet, this file won't be of much use to
you. Consider upgrading.)

The distribution contains four source files:

  • utthesis.dtx -- self-documenting LaTeX source code for the style
    file;

  • utthesis.ins -- installation "script" for the docstrip package;

  • ltxdoc.cfg -- configuration (class, packages) for the docstrip
    package;

  • Makefile -- the makefile used by the GNU make program, and the
    "cls/" subdirectory which contains all ".dtx"
    files that are included by the main utthesis.dtx
    style file.

To install, you need to say either "make utthesis.cls" or straight
"latex utthesis.ins", then move the resulting utthesis.cls file
somewhere where TeX can find it.

Detailed (albeit still incomplete in places) documentation can be
found in the file utthesis.pdf. This documentation can also be
generated by saying "pdflatex utthesis.dtx".

There is also a sample thesis document that you can use as a template
for writing your thesis, in thesis.tex. You can build this by
running "pdflatex thesis", "biber thesis" and "makeindex thesis"
until things converge (usually this takes three runs of "pdflatex").

If you don't like typing "pdflatex" so much, and you have "make"
available, you can type "make" to build the document class file and
the sample thesis document. You may also want to use the supplied
Makefile to jump-start building your own thesis.

Comments from Sergio

This style file does not have official status: I just happen to have
typeset my thesis with the new LateX 2e, using this style file, and
the thesis secretary seemed fairly pleased with the result. I am
making it available in the hope that the horror stories about people's
encounters with the thesis secretary may become a thing of the
past... but remember: requirements do change, and this style file
doesn't remove the need for you to heed TeX's warning messages about
overfull boxes and pages.

An older style file for LaTeX 2.09 is still available in various
places on campus. I used it as a starting point, but added a few
enhancements of my own.

I have no plans to maintain this thing. Users are on their own. But at
least I tried to document it as fully as time allowed me.

Instrucţiuni pentru redactarea tezelor de doctorat

Setarea paginii: A4

Margini

  • top 5cm;
  • botom 4,8cm;
  • left 3,7cm;
  • right 3,7cm;
  • header 4,3cm;
  • footer 0cm.

Font:

Verdana, 9p pentru textul de bază; 14p pentru titlu;
11p pentru subcapitole; 10p pentru paragrafe.

  • Tabs: 1,27cm.

More conventions, requirements, suggestions and hints

A PhD thesis at UPT is designed to be written in LaTeX, in Romanian or
in English, using UTF-8 character encoding (variable-width, minimum 8
bit wide characters, of which the first 7-bit ASCII characters,
one-hundred-twenty-eight, form a subset). Both LaTeX packages
inputenc, with the option "utf8" active, and fontenc, with the
option "T1" active, come with the class; use of the babel package,
for TeXnical support of various other languages, is recommended; yet
Hungarian (or Magyar) babel language breaks "\label" command in
chosen cross-references' management herein: please do not use it
unless a different TeXnique for cross-references were employed.
See BABEL.md for the complete list of languages and default codes.

As it is, many central TeXnical aspects of typesetting are focused
solely upon the pdflatex driver: for PSTricks, auto-pst-pdf
package is used, MS corefonts are accessed through a pdftex font map
file. Just to let one know, when building one's thesis' PDF
document, either directly via pdflatex command or by running make
on supplied Makefile.

The authors of dissertations are encouraged to use the Emacs editor
for typing their work in LaTeX. Previewing math fonts, varying input
methods, finding or describing symbols and commands, font
highlighting, spell checking, helpful graphical menus or intuitive
interactive interfacing, or faster via keybindings, auto-completion...
come all for free, agreeably and easily or highly customizable. This
LaTeX package was edited in Emacs and therefore, as a template, it
was written in the idea that users appreciate the potential of using
Emacs, whereby some later explanations duly follow.

As with any application using a programming language, the authors
should place their ".tex" files containing the chapters, sections
and subsections of the thesis inside the "src" directory. These
should make up the "source" code of the document. The directory
"etc" can be used for any other purpose: for instance, to change
ntheorem-like environments for different languages.

A special file "etc/cref.tex" define the macros to be used with the
automatic system of cross-references that comes with the utthesis
document class (see the Wiki page for more).

The first line in a ".tex" file specifies how Emacs should mould
upon it when one is editing the source file. The mode and the coding
options provide for UTF-8 Unicode.

The actual Emacs version string tested for the sample thesis is
"GNU Emacs 27.2 (*, x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 3.24.26, *) *"
