Unless I have misunderstood you, this is marginally off charter
You have probably set your start-up scripts to runlevel 5.
To startup wthout X, you could change this to runlevel 3.
Redhat probably have a polished tool to do this, or you could check
your documentation an/or any Redhad FAQ.
Some people prefer KDE, but the Redhat edition of KDE is not
widely praised. I know several people who are using FVWM
on slower machines with great success.
You probably set the choice of Window manager in the
'profile' of the user who is starting the X server, and again
this will be in the documenatation and any FAQ you can find.
