Thanx a lot since I ran on suse 8 before I should have tried this, this = way I can work with any kind of UML kernel until 2.6.0 without problems. It's not clear to me either what problem causes this behavior. ML -----Urspr=FCngliche Nachricht----- Von: ch...@in... [mailto:ch...@in...]=20 Gesendet: Sonntag, 28. Dezember 2003 00:42 An: m.l...@ml... Betreff: RE: [uml-user] UML doesn't start on Suse9.0 I encountered the same problem when compiling the kernel on SuSE 9.0. =20 The UML kept hanging while trying to start init. I transferred my = kernel source to a SuSE 8.2 machine and recompiled. After recompiling the same kernel configuration runs on any SuSE distro. I haven't found an explanation yet, but I think it is a gcc problem. Hmm... the last time a such problem happened the reason was that host libc = was=20 compiled with latest gcc while UML was compiled with gcc 2.95 (that was on= =20 Debian). You could also post the version of gcc, binutils and glibc used in= =20 the two distro's... UML is very sensitive about its compilation environment= ,=20 even more than the linux kernel, since it must link against glibc. Some details about the Systems (off the shelf): a) Suse 8.0 distro gcc 2.95.3, glibc 2.2.5, binutils 2.11.92.0.10 b) Suse 9.0 distro gcc 3.3.1, glibc 2.3.2, binutils 2.14.90.0.5 Is there a known good combination for versions of gcc and glibc ? I am running now plain vanilla 2.4.23+skas and 2.6.0+test9-1(no mod)=20 successfully on both distros, compiled on Suse 8. How can I check with what compiler glibc has been compiled? Here what I just found somewhere else:----snip---- 2.4 UML kernels build on a 9.0 install don't work :-/=20 Seems to be some gcc issue, s/-O2/-O1/ fixes it.=20 -----snip------- from: http://www.suse.de/~kraxel/uml/howto.html didn't try it so far, maybe within the next days. bye >>>SE M.Lorenz<<< =20 > -----Original Message----- > From: use...@li...=20 > [mailto:use...@li...] On=20 > Behalf Of BlaisorBlade > Sent: Saturday, January 03, 2004 5:13 PM > To: use...@li... > Subject: Re: AW: [uml-user] UML doesn't start on Suse9.0 >=20 > Alle 20:52, venerd=EC 2 gennaio 2004, M.Lorenz ha scritto: > > Thanx a lot since I ran on suse 8 before I should have tried this,=20 > > this way I can work with any kind of UML kernel until 2.6.0=20 > without problems. > > > > It's not clear to me either what problem causes this behavior. >=20 > Hmm... the last time a such problem happened the reason was=20 > that host libc was compiled with latest gcc while UML was=20 > compiled with gcc 2.95 (that was on Debian).
