I am not yet understanding the idear behind and the way uml_net
I try to set up one (for now) uml guest which has full access to
the outside network and (for sake of ssh and scp) is allso
reachable from the outside. Both networks my notebook (which
volunteered to be the host) usually is in are serviced by dhcp
ip's I get are non necessarily the same. Default gateways do
change between the networks, of cause.
For routing to work properly, my guest uml needs to know the
outside's default gateway, right? Normally dhcp takes care of
that, but with the tun/tap interface not beeing able to broadcast
to the outer network at setup this might be a problem. Plus, I
needtwo ipaddresses, for both ends of the tun pipe.
So, what is the recommended way to do this? I met jdike
(spelling?) on irc and he mentioned bridging host eth0 and tun0
or using dhcpproxy. Has someone gotten this to work, written
startup files for the host and guest and perhaps even documented
this? Where does uml_net come into the picture? for which
environment was it written? can I adapt it to dhcp?
What about masquerading the tun interface on hosts eth0? that
should be the easiest and most flexible way of handling this
configuration, except I wont be ablt to ssh to the guest. But I
do not think that uml_net supports that, right?
How do YOU do this?
