Hmm, I just tried that, and it works fine:

I'd have another look at your /tmp. Is it full, or close to it? UML is going
to create a sparse 256M file, but I don't see that causing any problems for
any modern filesystems.

I take this back. I thought you weren't successfully booting, so when I
booted up fine, I assumed I wasn't seeing the problem.
I didn't check the error log, though. I did later, for the hell of it, and
discovered it was full of 'tree inconsistent with list' messages.
So, I'll figure out what's happening here...
