hi brian, i found this question being unanswered while deleting old mail - so - better a late answer instead of no answer :) you really seem to confuse things regarding "X" a little bit (ok - no problem - i have seen people working with unix for years still confusing this :) xnest itself is a XCLIENT AND XSERVER (both!) which indeed needs an XSERVER itself to run - you don`t need it here! to have X running with uml, you don`t need an xserver inside uml - you only need one on the client-pc where you want to "see" a window (and you seem to have one, because you say you see the basic cursor and the gray background). by "X -query umlxserver" you are not querying a xserver - don`t confuse that. you are indeed starting your very own xserver and telling it to query an X DISPLAY MANAGER (like xdm, kdm, gdm...) and that is resposible for setting up an X-Desktop-Environment on your .....XSERVER..... you have already running on you client pc (but not inside uml). there is one solution left, which does, what you think of and which works without an xserver on your pc: Xvnc! that is an xserver which can run inside uml without any additional "x-dependency" on the client. you just need a vncviewer on your client-pc to connect to Xvnc inside uml - thats all. works great! regards roland ps: >Here's where I'm at: I've set DISPLAY=:0 and then run Xnest try setting display to: export DISPLAY=your_cygwin/linux-workstation_IP:0.0 and start a window- manager/xclock/xterm/xteddy - whatever..... pps: maybe http://www.tutorialized.com/tutorials/Linux/X-Windows/1 is a good site to learn some more about X11. the most comprehensive list about "X" should be: http://www.rahul.net/kenton/xsites.html - maybe there are some links for you, too (didn`t look in detail) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brian Jarrett" <bja...@ga...> To: <use...@li...> Sent: Monday, April 12, 2004 10:54 PM Subject: [uml-user] making a uml vm act as Xserver... Hello, I've spent the better part of a day trying to get uml to act as an xserver, allowing remote network access. I've read about xnest, xhost, etc. and am really confused. Here's where I'm at: I've set DISPLAY=:0 and then run Xnest on the uml machine that I want to act as an x server. If I run ("X -query umlxserver") from Cygwin on a workstation, I get the basic cursor (big x) and gray background, but nothing else. So I'm thinking that it's basically ready. I can't, however, seem to get any apps to run, and have no clue how to go about it. I want the uml xserver to be running x and the software, while having cygwin or other linux workstations acting as the terminal. Any help would be appreciated.
