If you start with a stage3 image, you shouldn't have to compile anything on install, though you may have to do some compiling when you emerge new updates. I think you can create your own emerge server with compiled updates and have the UMLs fetch them from there to avoid compiling updates on the UML, but I haven't done that myself. > Also, how much disk space would be recommended for it? It's quite flexible on what you have to install, so I expect 3GB would be fine.
