Jeff,

Unfortunately I don't have the upstream bandwidth to send you an image with java installed. However, to recreate the problem from a debian host, all you need to do is the following (this is off the cuff, so I may have missed a minor detail or two):

* create a 2G image file with dd and mkfs.ext3
* mount it somewhere and use "debbootstrap sarge /mountpath" (mountpath being wherever you mounted it)
* download sun's jdk from  http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html (you need the  "J2SE v 1.4.2_05 SDK")
* install it in /mountpath/opt by doing:
  * cd /mountpath/opt
  * ~/j2sdk-1.4.2_05-linux-i586.bin (or wherever you downloaded it to)
* download jboss from http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/jboss/jboss-3.2.5.tar.gz?download
* untar it to /opt like
  * cd /mountpath/opt
  * tar -xzvf ~/jboss-3.2.5.tar.gz (or wherever you downloaded it to)
* change /etc/apt/sources.list to have at least: "deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free"
* chroot to /mountpath and do "apt-get update;apt-get upgrade"
* unmount the image and boot it with a 2.6.8.1 UML kernel mem=256M eth0=...
* JAVA_HOME=/opt/j2sdk1.4.2_05 /opt/jboss-3.2.5/bin/run.sh

((BOOM))

I'd like to get my hands on a filesystem with Java installed
which can reproduce this. If you can give me one, send me
the URL and I'll take a look.
