u need to configure either TUN/TAP device or ethertap device on the actual host to attach the virtual ethernet with it.
for ethertap u need to do following on the host machine
mknod /dev/tap0 c 36 16
on UML running
./linux ubd0=root_fs eth0=ethertap,tap0,fe:fd:0:0:0:1,tap_device_ip_address.
