A few weeks ago, information was spread about a security vulnerability claimed to be present in UseBB 1.0.14. More specifically, it should be a Cross Site Request Forgery vulnerability in the Admin Control Panel. I would like to be clear about this: this issue or vulnerability is NOT present in the UseBB 1.0.14 forum software package. CSRF issues were present in previous versions but were reported and fixed in 1.0.12 (April 2011). Verification and testing revealed no existing issue in the ACP in the current stable version of UseBB 1. Next to this, I have received no message from the author of the posted exploit, before (or after) the release on several websites. Neither did I see any bug report or message on GitHub or UseBB.net. Any of the previous could have avoided or limited this kind of false information being spread. It is not the first time this has happened, and this previously brought up the idea of having our personal database of vulnerability disclosures in UseBB products. This event only confirmed that an official and centralised place for disclosures in UseBB is a must. I hereby would also like to (again) stress the fact that information available on many "security websites" is of a very questionable quality and should be taken with a serious grain of salt. A number of days ago, a second Git(Hub) repository was opened, this time for keeping the UseBB 1 resources (mods, ACP modules, translations, etc). This repository has been filled with most of the currently available resources in the SF.net trackers. README files were added, showing information per resource, and links have been added at UseBB.net. The goal of this change is to make cooperation easier (using the Git version control system), track changes and centralise stuff even more. As a result, the SF.net trackers will be phased out and removed in the future. If you develop and share resources, please be aware of this change and contribute your files or changes to the Git repository (by forking or sending your files to our email address). The repository can be found at https://github.com/usebb/v1.0-resources. GitHub help is at http://help.github.com/. --Dietrich |

Hello Just recently the current codebase for UseBB 2.0.0 (in a pre-alpha state) has been added to GitHub. Please feel free to comment on things, make forks, or create issues in the tracker. https://github.com/usebb/UseBB Thanks Dietrich |

Hello all This is a small notice about the partial move to GitHub. GitHub is a quite new hosting service for (Open Source) projects, similar to SourceForge.net, which uses Git as a version control system and makes it easy for many users at once to collaborate and work on the software. Because of its popularity and the "open" way people not in a project team can fork a project and make changes or fixes have made me decide to migrate UseBB from SF.net. In practice this means UseBB will stop using Subversion and move its source code to the Git repo at GitHub. The Trac set-up at SF.net will be removed as well, once all tickets and wiki pages have moved to GitHub issues and wiki. Only downloads, UseBB 1.0 resources trackers etc will currently remain at SF.net. With this, the website will also be altered a little, with a slightly simpler page contents and updated references to the source code. Current status: - move source code: done - move Trac tickets: soon - move Trac wiki: soon - update website: soon In case anyone already wants to have a look at GitHub, please see https://github.com/usebb/. When viewing the single repository 'UseBB', note the two branches available. 'master' is for the future UseBB 2 code. Regards Dietrich |

Small adjustment: one issue has not been fixed in SVN yet, so the changelog is not really "definitive". But there will be no other feature changes except the ones currently listed and implemented. 2011/3/30 Dietrich Moerman <die...@us...>: > Hello > > A couple of security issues have been found, and thus 1.0.12 will be > released within the next days. > > The current changelog and list at the wiki [1] is definitive, so no > further anti-spam stuff will be added in 1.0.12. Hello A couple of security issues have been found, and thus 1.0.12 will be released within the next days. The current changelog and list at the wiki [1] is definitive, so no further anti-spam stuff will be added in 1.0.12. A possible list for 1.0.13 is here [2]. The previous changes have been tested on the UseBB.net forum for some time (months), and I will perform more tests before release. Hello As noted before, the CVS repository will close in favour of Subversion. Today, a migration has happened from UseBB 1 in CVS to a branch in SVN. Also, all the release tags have been copied to the tags directory. Checking out UseBB 1.0 can now happen through the command: svn co https://usebb.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/usebb/branches/UseBB-1.0 More information is at http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/usebb/#LegacyUseBB1information and http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/usebb/wiki/SourceCode for general information and UseBB 2 specifics. The CVS repository now remains unchanged and will be closed in the future. Thank you for your understanding. |

As you can see from the announcement list and public website, there is an RSS feed security issue in 1.0.10. Therefore, a patch was released and 1.0.11 containing the fix will be released soon. The (probably permanent) changelog for 1.0.11: - Added possibility to remove user's posts upon removing user in ACP. - Added possibility to ban user's email address or domain upon removing user in ACP. - Added preview feature for member pruning in ACP. - Added setting to enable/disable PHP's error log. - Added user delete link for admin on profiles. - Fixed security issue with forum/topic RSS feeds with "read" forum permission. - Fixed bug that didn't update stats on full forum delete. - Fixed bug that didn't adjust posts from certain members upon member pruning. - Fixed bug #2492: never logged in users are always pruned with member pruning. - Fixed bug #2488: CSS overflow for post contents. - Fixed bug #2451: 403 error for active topics feed when no topics available. - Fixed new/missing settings' wrong default values in ACP. - SQL toolbox now prints usable HTML table for results instead of textbox. - Removed ICQ status icons from profile. - Hide "deprecated" warnings from PHP 5.3. - Forum select boxes are larger. - "Remember me" now unchecked on login form. - Single error for unexisting user and wrong password on login form. If you have the means, time and interest please download the latest CVS HEAD and test this before the release (there will be no for at least 7 days from now on). --Dietrich |

To fully migrate to Subversion (as already used for v2), the UseBB 1.0 sources will, after the release of 1.0.11, be moved to branches/UseBB-1.0 in the Subversion repository. Any future code changes will then occur there, and new releases will be copied to tags/UseBB-1.0.x. For access information, please see http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/usebb/wiki/SourceCode. This is one step to make the infrastructure simpler. Quite likely, the current website will also be replaced by a simpler (lighter) one listing v1 and v2 next to each other until a new website with the release of 2.0.0. --Dietrich |

UseBB 1.0.11 changelog so far: - Added possibility to remove user's posts upon removing user in ACP. - Added possibility to ban user's email address or domain upon removing user in ACP. - Fixed bug that didn't update stats on full forum delete. - Added user delete link for admin on profiles. - Removed ICQ status icons from profile. - Hide "deprecated" warnings from PHP 5.3. Most of the changes are to accommodate removal of spam accounts. Any posts of spammers registering manually or getting through a weak anti-spam question previously had to be removed manually. Now this will be with a simple click. I will be testing it a bit more and uploading it on the public forums before a release perhaps later this month or April. --Dietrich |

Hello all As you may know, Trac has been set up to manage planned functionality for 2.0, and can be found at http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/usebb/wiki. Because I fear a lack of time in certain weeks and to keep the 2.0 goal feasible within a decent time, I postponed the features that were previously marked for 2.0.0 alpha 3 to 2.1.0. This includes: polls, threaded topics, private messages, attachments, etc. More features may be postponed in the future eventually. So 2.0 will be a basic functional release with (at this time) still 2 planned alpha releases. "2.0.0 final" will be at least equal to 1.0 in functionality, ofcourse with the huge code rewrite, modules, tagging, etc. 2.1.0 will be the extended version with (optional!) modules for the features described above. I must also remind people to the fact that more tickets may be submitted to Trac. These can be discussed and set to a milestone for some future release. See http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/usebb/report Regards Dietrich |

Hello all, For those of you still on this list and interested in 2.0, here is a short announcement. :) During the past few weeks I have worked on adding content to a Trac system set up by SourceForge.net. Trac is an integrated bug tracker, wiki and SVN interface. Basically, this replaces the old "development center" that has been quite useless over the years. So what has been added already: * Many tickets with tasks to be implemented in v2 * Milestones (alpha x, beta x) for v2 with tickets assigned * Some content that used to be in a document posted here in 2007, including UseBB 1 design flaws * The reworked "roadmap" as ProjectOutline * etc. The goal is to alter the tickets and add more (technical) information once it is being implemented. Also it will give everybody a clear view of what to expect and possibly how soon. Feel free to add tickets or comment on existing ones (SF.net account required). Link: http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/usebb/ In other news I have also been working on 1.0.10 with its slightly changed RSS feeds (per forum and topic) and a solution to an issue emailed. This still needs adjusting and testing. I don't have much time this week so there might be a release at earliest next week. Regards --Dietrich |

A quick message to note that UseBB 1.0.10 will be released soon. Currently on the changelog: - Redirect to the previously selected pane on activating member in ACP. - Added email address tooltip on profile link in ACP activate members pane. - Fixed malfunctioning RSS Feed when friendly URLs are enabled. - Translate IP address ::1 in session to 127.0.0.1 for consistency. - Made usernames in IP address lookup clickable. - Mass email in board default language and only to unique email addresses. - Personal emails now sent in correct (recipient's) language. On a previous request, per forum RSS feeds will also be added. --Dietrich |

It can run through a HTTP server (CGI) but it will need recompilation for every different platform. I think this goes a bit too far. --Dietrich |

People have started expressing their concerns about UseBB, especialy version 2 or lack thereof. As written previously, UseBB 2 development has been in an inactive state for a large period of time. Since the first inception of the project in October 2003, quite a lot has changed on the web and in my personal life, work and interests. The project started as a small experiment and PHP practice and took a long time to get to the first stable release (1.0.0). Since then ideas have existed to write a second version of the forum, solving the many issues and mistakes made in the period I wrote UseBB 1 as a teenager. Nowadays, I'm nearly 22, completed college and going to university to complete a bridging programme and gain a Master's degree in Computer Science. Next to this, I have got a few new hobbies and not to forget a beautiful girlfriend. Prgramming in my free time has been at a very low level during the previous years. The Last.fm Simple Stats module for Drupal has been taken over and its development is now continued thanks to a few people, though UseBB has mostly remained a single person project and thus inactive during the past years. While my free time is quite limited nowadays and my interest in PHP went down, I still have the idea to complete UseBB 2 in PHP, but can not give any date when this will be the case. It is certainly true to state that at this day there are dozens different free forum packages offering the same. And while UseBB 2 was planned with a different feature set and possibilities, plans might change to adapt UseBB better to what the web has become today, with YouTube and Facebook in many people's daily life, and what people expect from today's web applications. The future after UseBB 2 is uncertain and depends on what interest it will gain with the current and future users and developers. Quite likely, if it depends on me, UseBB 3 (if any) will not be written in PHP and thus will leave behind more than seven years of PHP development experience to develop a new package in a different programming language, taking the existing project (or a new one, eventually) out of the PHP forum package forest. So, what about UseBB for now? UseBB 1 is still there and 1.0.10 will be released later on. UseBB 2 is in an alpha state and the development will be picked up again, maybe next summer. UseBB 1 cannot give the right solution to all forum software questions nowadays and as of this day should be considered legacy software. -- Dietrich Moerman UseBB founder and developer |
