Would it be worth it to switch this over to use bluetooth and set it so that it just looks for a device ID or MAC or whatever? A LOT of people have bluetooth devices now and it would work great in conjunction with a bluetooth headset used for home voice control. (I'm thinking HAL2000 software)

A Bluetooth implementation would solve the issue I have with the device...it needs a battery. You could use your cell phone which is likely to be with you at most times. At the moment I'm planning on using an RFID that I'll keep in my wallet to avoid batteries, but the cell phone would work also.

I've actually tried implementing this. Bluetooth pings can be kind of tricky and are very dependent on which stack your hardware supports (WiddComm / Microsoft / Toshiba / etc). When it does work, the link is surprisingly fragile. If you're not constantly sending data the link can drop very easily, and if you are constantly sending data, it drains your phone. At the very least, the presence beacon I was able to buildwould only indicate presence once every 30 seconds and could skip up to two pings.

I understand this is why most people don't activate the Bluetooth phone locking on Mac products, as it ends up being next to useless.
