It hadn't occured to me that I could use piklab itself to program the PIC. I didn't realise it supported JDM-style programmers. Selecting the "Direct programmer" option and programming, however, it seems to have succeeded (although I haven't verified this yet.)

So, in retrospect, this was slightly off-topic - apologies.
