Sorry for my late reply (I was on a holiday for 2 weeks).
The error you are getting doesn't seem to have any relation with the 
graphical part you are trying to remove. Did you know by the way that 
usbpicprog (as it is) can also run in a command line mode without any 
graphics? just try usbpicprog --help for the parameters!

Does the windows program with the graphical interface work or does it 
give you the same error?
