i figured it out for some reason if filesharing is turned off then portmapper couldn't find the router.

to turn it on go here. "Control Panel\Network and Sharing Center"

      Hello,

If the PortMapper is not able to find your router, UPnP probably is deactivated on your router. The automatic discovery should work, if the router has UPnP activated. I don't know much about UPnP as PortMapper just uses a third party library that handles UPnP (http://www.sbbi.net/site/upnp/).

Maybe windows provides an UPnP service (that is found by PortMapper) when activating filesharing, but I don't have any experiences with this.

By the way: activating UPnP on the router is a security problem itself: Any virus or malware executed on any computer in the LAN can configure a port forwarding that allows incoming traffic, see http://www.sbbi.net/site/upnp/docs/security.html#Devices+security

      Dear Felgard,
In Windows Vista Microsoft has made some changes to how UPnP is handled and I think that the Java implementation on Windows could be affected by this. Because of the higher security, UPnP (which has been renamed "Network Discovery" in Vista) is disabled by default in all editions of Vista as Windows Firewall blocks network discovery, filesharing relaxes the firewall policy so that might be why it works with it on. Have you tried running UPnP PortMapper with network discovery set to on?
      Yours sincerely,

according to process explorer i does a call using udp on on address
0.0.0.0:1901 but after a few seconds it stops and the software then
displays "WARN Could not connect to router: No router devices found"

          Hello Felgard,

I think, I can't make you any hopes, getting PortMapper to work with your router. I do know only very little about how UPnP works, I only use a library that handles UPnP (http://www.sbbi.net/site/upnp/index.html). I am afraid, that this project is not active any more, so there won't be any bug fixes :-/

But if you know another UPnP library for Java that is still under active development, I would give it a try and integrate it into PortMapper.

          Kind regards,

          Christoph.

That is a bit odd, do you experience the same problems with uTorrent or Vuze's (Azureus) UPnP implementation? uTorrent uses Windows internal UPnP implementation while Vuze has it's own implementation in Java just as UPnP PM does. Both of them give you log files and it would have been nice to see if they experience the same problem or if they do not then what their logs say. Also you might like to look at what kind or response you get from your router, you can do this by using Wireshark (http://www.wireshark.org/) or if you feel Wireshark is a bit difficult to use you can use SmartSniff (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/smsniff.html), but install WinPcap and use that driver to capture packets with both applications. This would be especially interesting if another UPnP implementation actually works, this way we might see what the difference is and maybe find a way to make UPnP PM work for you too :-)
