Hi i have just installed umtsmon   (Lubuntu 11.04 , Acer travelmate, Modem:ZTE MF102)
seems like you are still pretty much alone monitoring signal strenght..
..well this was just a thought but could there be an option to let wvdial.conf handle the connection details?..
that would make it one place to configure init strings for best performance.. im shure the other distros have similar commonly used modem connection programs that could be used for them..

thx for a darn good program!!  signals are still weak and real time readings are hard to get.

    Thanks for the compliment!

    Unfortunately, you might be wrong.
Signal strength in 1G/2G/2.5G networks is directly related to power in transmitting and receiving.

For 3G and up, that is no longer true. So you can have a very bad connection (due to e.g. signal reflections) whilst you have 5 bars and have an extremely fast direct pipe with only one bar.

I think that is why most newer tools never bothered to implement it - it's false security.
