UltraDefrag 7.1.0 and 8.0.0 have been released

Dear customers!

Finally the previously announced 7.1.0 version of the program is ready for download. It fixes a lot of bugs and features improved disk processing algorithms. Also we're pleased to announce that we have relicensed UltraDefrag sources to Green Gate Systems, LLC. You are welcome to check out their enhanced 8.0 version of the program. It features automatic defragmentation and much faster disk processing algorithms.

The removal of the GNU GPL license and changed into a proprietary one to Green Gate Systems is interesting. Will more information be released concerning the new v8 features "the disk processing algorithms were highly optimized for speed and efficiency" and "deep action option was added"? What does this mean and what are these changes?

What kind of future development based on v8 is planned, and will buying a v8-edition license also bring you free updates? Will the GNU GPL-licensed 7.1 code and releases be further developed and maintained or is it the final feature release(not counting bugfixes)?

      Hello,

      Thank you for interesting questions!

The sentence "disk processing algorithms were highly optimized for speed" simply means that the new algorithms do the job much faster than the old ones. In other words, the disk processing takes much less time.

Highly improved disk processing efficiency means that the program evaluates efficiency of individual disk processing passes much more precisely. While 7.1 algorithms basically do as many passes as possible, the improved algorithms automatically stop the disk processing when any further processing doesn't make any sense.

The deep action option is explained in detail in the UltraDefrag Handbook. In short, the option simply disables all filters and forces the program to defragment/optimize all files on the disk. Of course, you may disable the filters manually and then reenable them again, but it takes a lot of time to properly adjust all the settings manually. That's why the new option has been introduced. In UltraDefrag 8 you just click Action > Deep action to enable/disable all the filters. Of course, that's much easier to do and it takes just a couple of seconds.

So, overall, UltraDefrag 8 does the job much faster and is more convenient to use, and, I'm sure, its further development will make it even better. I do have a copy of UltraDefrag 8 myself and I'm already pretty impressed how it works.

      Best regards,

PS: forgot to mention, if you purchase UltraDefrag 8 you get unlimited number of free updates.

PPS: personally, at the moment I have no plans to develop UltraDefrag 7 any further.

Does a purchase of 8.0+ only go to Green Gate Systems or does it still help go toward the GPL project? Is Dimitri involved with Green Gate Systems or at least get something from the purchases?
Will development continue on the GPL version from main developers? Are outside contributions still considered that could make it into future releases?
