The original Quake and Hexen 2 both had their interfaces designed with 320x200 and 640x400 resolution in mind. although the games can support much wider array of resolutions, only thouse two display all of the interfaces, including menus, hud, console and fonts in the way that's meant to be with a 4:5 aspect pixels and 4:3 aspect game window. however, this pixel aspect was applied to interface only with the ingame view stayed in 1:1. But in HoT when 320x200 or 640x400 is selected the ingame view stretch vertically too.
to prove the point about 4:5 hud you can just pick up some artifacts. they images will be "sqished" in the interface, which is especially noticable with round ones like disc of repulsion or chaos device.
the ideal solution would be to add an option to correct interface aspect ratio at any resolution
here's two shots 640x400 and 640x480 both doubled and 400 corrected to be 4:3
notice that ingame view is identical on both, but the items icons keep the shape of the corresponding objects and slightly tallier hud on 400
the shots was taken from original h2
