#32 need to restart the system to have it work

I installed the Mozilla Build of Firefox by strictly following the installation guide at http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/ubuntuzilla/index.php?title=Main_Page#Installation

After succesfully finishing the installation, I CLOSED THE OLD VERSION of the browser, I went to the Applications menu, Internet and I launched "Mozilla Build of Firefox".

However, this still only launched the old 3.6 version of Firefox which was previously installed.

Then I rebooted the system, and then it worked.

Restarting the whole system just to get the newly installed mozilla build to work shoud definitely not be necessary. If it is unavoidable, then it should definitely be mentioned in the installation guide, as the last step: restart your computer.

I'm now realising that, though I had closed Firefox, I hadn't closed Thunderbird. Maybe the system restart wasn't needed and what is needed is to close Thunderbird as well?

If so, it is still necessary to mention it in the installation guide. Note that i just installed the new version of Firrefox, not thunderbird. From the point of view of the user they are two completely unrelated programs. "How many other 'Mozilla' programs may I have running that I need to close in order to have the newly installed version of Firefox work?" one may ask.

My guess is that that you have not closed all firefox windows (maybe you had a stray minimized one on one of your desktops), and your FF session was in fact still active. Next time, try doing File -> Quit from the menu, to make sure that the program has exited. You can double-check by running "pgrep firefox" in a terminal. If that returns a process ID, you still have a firefox process running.
