Windows Services

Please be aware the Service feature is being revamped. Much of this is a proposed change for the next release.

Services are long-running programs. They run in the background and have no interface or front-end. Sometimes there are services you do not need running. The logic here is simple: If you do not need what the service provides, disable it. However, it is not always that simple. Sometimes services depend on other services to function normally. Programs require services as well, even odd ones you would not expect. I have done much research on Windows Services, and will continue to do so. To make it easy you will see only services of interest, be able to quickly disable large groups of unneeded services, and learn about the services you want to disable.

Quick Disable

These are the services disabled next to the label "Quick Disable".

Corporate Services: Application Management, Distributed Link Tracking Client, IPsec Polic Agent, Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Service, Netlogon, Network Access Protection Agent, Offline Files, Remote Procedure Call Locator, SNMP Trap, WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service, Windows Remote Management (WS-Management)
Security Services: Remote Registry, SSDP Discovery, TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, Server, UPnP Device Host, Terminal Services
Other Services: Certificate Propagation, Computer Browser, DWM Session Manager, Diagnostic Policy Service, Diagnostic Service Host, Fax, HomeGroup Provider, LLT Discovery Mapper, Parental Controls, Program Compatibility Assistant Service, Security Center, Shell Hardware Detection, Superfetch, Tablet PC, Telephony, Themes, Windows Media Network Sharing Service, Windows Search

Please note that the Security Services are potential threats to the security of your system, and not helpful services protecting you. For example, the Remote Registry service allows another system to have remote access to your system's registry. This is very bad if hacker got access to it. Therefore, if you do not use such a feature, you should have it disabled. The same logic goes for the other security services, and similar for every other service (although the other services are not really a risk in terms of security).
